From August 5 to 7, the Comprehensive Development Goals for Human and Society (CDGs) 2025 Summer Seminar was held at Renmin University of China (RUC). The event gathered over 80 climate change experts and scholars from nearly 40 institutions across more than 10 countries and regions.
The seminar featured a main forum, a prologue forum, four roundtables, and four parallel forums. Through dialogues and an examination of China's practices in areas such as economy, society, energy, and technology, the forum was designed to strengthen global climate cooperation and advance sustainable development.
At the main forum on August 6, keynote speeches were delivered by Nobuo Tanaka, former executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA); Chen Deliang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Chen Weirong, head of China Southern Power Grid.
RUC Vice President Zheng Xinye gave opening remarks, highlighting climate change's profound impact on energy security and social stability. He emphasized the forum's role in gathering experts to build a platform for global cooperation.
The speakers focused on several key areas.
Nobuo Tanaka called for enhanced global collaboration on green platforms and for the IEA to expand its strategic role.
Chen Deliang stressed the need to improve energy system resilience through innovation and increased international data sharing.
Chen Weirong recommended building a climate risk warning system, diversifying energy supply, and creating new climate financial products.
A key report titled Comprehensive Development Goals for Human and Society: From SDGs to CDGs was released by Associate Professor Chen Jiaying. The report proposes the new CDGs indicator system, building on China's development experience to offer a fresh framework for global development.
Shunsuke Managi of Kyushu University in Japan, as well as Wang Wen and Xie Lunyu of RUC noted that the CDGs' importance lies in systematizing China's development experience. They emphasized that the CDGs effectively complement the SDGs by integrating China's practical experience. This framework offers valuable insights for linking global poverty reduction with sustainable development, provides theoretical and practical support for the 2050 global vision, and brings a fresh perspective to global development.
On the final day, attendees visited enterprises in Beijing for a research tour on new quality productive forces.
The seminar series aims to continue fostering international dialogue and contributing applied economics expertise to support comprehensive human and societal development.
