The ​History of Renmin University of China

On Nov 1, Shaanbei Public School, a predecessor of Renmin University of China (RUC), officially held its opening ceremony. Within two years, it trained over 6,000 professionals and administrators and welcomed more than 3,000 young people into the Communist Party of China, contributing to the nation's efforts during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).

On July 7, North China United University was formally established in Yan'an, Shaanxi province. The university comprised the School of Social Sciences, with the Department of Law and Politics, and the Department of Finance and Economics; the School of Education, with the Department of Education; the School of Arts and Literature, with the Department of Drama, the Department of Music, the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Literature; and the School of Engineering, with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mining.


During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the university operated for six years under extremely challenging conditions, training more than 10,000 professionals and educators. These included over 3,000 political, economic and administrative specialists, more than 3,000 educators, over 1,000 cultural and artistic professionals, as well as hundreds of teachers and scholars of political theory, literature, arts, education, law and economics. Additionally, more than 2,000 cadres received short-term professional training.

In November, Xinhua University was founded and later renamed Northern University.


From November 1945 to July 1948, the university established seven colleges — Administration, Finance and Economics, Culture and Education, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture and Arts — as well as two research offices in History, and Finance and Economics. It trained and provided more than 2,000 professionals to support the nation's educational and administrative development.

On Aug 24, North China University held its inauguration ceremony. From August 1948 to the end of 1949, it trained more than 20,000 professionals, playing an important role in China's historic transition and nation-building efforts.

On Dec 16, the Decision on the Establishment of Renmin University of China was adopted by the central government.


1950

On Oct 3, Renmin University of China held its opening ceremony. At its inception, the university established eight departments: Economics; Economic Planning; Public Finance, Credit and Banking; Trade; Cooperatives; Factory Management; Law; and Diplomacy.


From its founding to 1965, the university admitted more than 400 international students from 24 countries and regions, fostering global academic exchanges.

On July 26, the university held a grand assembly to mark its reopening. In the early years after reopening, RUC restored and newly established 15 departments, namely Philosophy, Political Economy, Scientific Socialism, History of the Communist Party of China, Law, Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism, Chinese History, Archival Science, Planning and Statistics, Public Finance, Industrial Economics, Trade Economics, Agricultural Economics, and Economic Information Management.


In 2007, the Ministry of Education approved eight first-level disciplines and eight second-level disciplines at RUC as national key disciplines, ranking the university first nationwide in the field of humanities and social sciences.

Entering the early 21st century, Renmin University of China seized major strategic opportunities, accelerated its development, and became a flagship institution of higher education in the humanities and social sciences in China.
