On Sept 13, the conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Wei Xinghua — recipient of the national honorary title "People's Educator" was held at the Tongzhou Campus of Renmin University of China (RUC).
Scholars gathered to honor Professor Wei Xinghua's outstanding academic achievements and educational legacy, while engaging in in-depth discussions on major theoretical and practical issues of political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.
Born in 1925, Wei was a renowned Marxist economist and a recipient of the national honorary titles "People's Educator" and "Role Model of Striving China." He served as former president of the Capital Research Association at China's comprehensive universities, an honorary first-grade professor at RUC, and the former head of its Department of Economics. He passed away in 2019.
In his remarks, Zhang Donggang, secretary of CPC RUC Committee, said that Professor Wei devoted decades to rigorous scholarship and made indelible contributions to advancing the modernization of Marxist political economy, as well as to the founding and development of economics as an academic discipline in China.
He emphasized that the best way to honor Professor Wei is to carry forward his aspirations and continue along his path, closely integrating individual academic research with national development, and contributing to comprehensively advancing national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.
Zhang Zhuoyuan, former director of the Institute of Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in his address, described Professor Wei as an outstanding Marxist economist who kept pace with the times, a distinguished scholar and educator who dedicated his life to advancing and interpreting the Party's innovative theories—especially the economic theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Nearly 300 participants attended the event, including representatives from domestic universities and research institutions, Professor Wei's former students, and faculty and students from the School of Economics at RUC.
