About RUC

School of Physics

Overview

The School of Physics at Renmin University of China was launched in July 2024, growing out of the former Department of Physics founded in 2005. As a research-focused school, it was established to drive excellence in physics, support China's scientific advancement, and strengthen capabilities in cutting-edge technology.

Dedicated to educating the next generation of innovators, the school follows international standards in its operations, offers modern teaching facilities, excels in research, and maintains a global outlook — making it a promising newcomer among physics institutions worldwide.

Academic Achievements

The school offers two undergraduate majors — Physics and Materials Physics — as well as a doctoral program in Physics covering three key areas: Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Atomic & Molecular Physics, each of which also offers master's degrees.

The Physics program was designated a National First-Class Undergraduate Major in 2020, and in 2021 the school was named a Ministry of Education "Top-Tier Talent Training 2.0 Base". The school's research accomplishments have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including:

National Natural Science Award (Second Prize)

Ministry of Education Natural Science Award (First Prize)

Beijing Science and Technology Award (Second Prize)

Zhejiang Natural Science Award (Second Prize)

Research Platforms

The school hosts a number of key laboratories and research centers, such as:

the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Quantum State Construction and Control,

Beijing Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Functional Materials & Micro-Nano Devices,

Renmin University Neutron Scattering Key Laboratory,

and Renmin University Interdisciplinary Research Center for Quantum States of Matter.

It is equipped with advanced spectroscopic systems, modern quantum platforms including ion traps, and a high-performance computing cluster with computing power reaching hundreds of teraflops. In addition, shared experimental platforms support the full research cycle — from advanced computing and sample preparation to material characterization and property analysis — providing comprehensive support for scientific and educational activities.

Faculty

The school has built a well-rounded and dynamic academic team with diverse expertise and backgrounds. As of September 2024, the faculty includes 45 full-time members: 24 professors, 17 associate professors, and 4 lecturers. Among them, 13 have been selected for national high-level talent programs. All faculty members hold PhDs from leading institutions in China and abroad — eight earned doctoral degrees overseas — and more than 90 percent have at least one year of international research experience.

Talent Development

To date, the school has awarded degrees to 916 graduates, including 571 bachelor's, 197 master's, and 148 PhD recipients. The school's graduates are recognized for their strong preparation and professionalism, with many continuing to work at leading universities, research institutes, and top companies in China and abroad. The school currently enrolls 121 undergraduate and 196 graduate students.
