Founded in 2005, the School of Chinese Classics (Guoxue) is the first academic institution in China to be coined after the term "Guoxue" (meaning Chinese classics). It offers a comprehensive system of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs.
Upholding the concept of "Greater Guoxue" — an academic idea proposed by Ji Xianlin who advocates that Chinese classics should encompass the cultural systems of all 56 ethnic groups and diverse regions of China — the school focuses on Chinese classics and classical studies. With the goal of addressing contemporary needs and engaging with the world, it explores the meanings of the classics, traces their historical evolution, maps the structural features of China's traditional knowledge system, examines their influence on neighboring regions and the wider world, and highlights the significance of Chinese civilization in human history.
The school emphasizes interdisciplinary research and boasts a strong faculty team with broad research coverage. Its academic fields span three first-level disciplines — Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, and philosophy — as well as eight second-level disciplines, including Chinese philosophy, Chinese linguistics and philology, classical Chinese philology, ancient Chinese literature, archaeology and museology, historical geography, specialized history, and ancient Chinese history. Undergraduate students can earn dual degrees in literature and history, while master's and doctoral students may obtain degrees in philosophy, literature, or history — depending on their research focus.
Committed to preserving traditional Chinese classics while also fostering innovation, the school cultivates talents with a broad international outlook and the ability to integrate tradition with modernity, as well as blending Chinese and Western cultures.
The school has established collaborative partnerships with leading universities and research institutions worldwide, including Harvard University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Bonn, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the University of Hamburg, the University of Gottingen, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London, the University of Manchester, Ghent University, Tel Aviv University, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University and others. These collaborations include student exchanges, joint research training and co-hosting international academic forums and conferences.
