The Lawyer College at Renmin University of China, established on April 26, 2010, was created to advance the national strategy for developing legal talent and to establish a specialized educational system for Chinese lawyers. As the first lawyer college founded by a major university under the Ministry of Education, it operates within the RUC Law School.
The Lawyer College plays a crucial role in training full-time Juris Master (JM) students at RUC Law School. It is actively involved in academic research, education and training, international exchanges, and the publication of legal textbooks. Its mission is to nurture high-quality, interdisciplinary legal professionals who can effectively serve society and the legal community.
Each year, the college welcomes dozens of JM students, both with and without prior legal education, most of whom continue to become practicing lawyers after graduation. Drawing from years of teaching experience, the college has developed the concept of "lawyer education", offering courses focused on practical legal skills. It employs a "Dual Supervisor" system where academic professors guide theoretical studies, while experienced legal professionals provide practical training and career guidance.
The college launched the RUC Entrepreneurship and Innovation Legal Service Workstation in March 2019. This initiative, in collaboration with the RUC Entrepreneurship College and the RUC Culture & Technology Enterprise Incubator, offers legal advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and startups, providing students with valuable industry experience.
Academic Research and International Exchanges
The college hosts the Secretariat of the China Law Society Lawyer Law Research Society and organizes major academic conferences. It has produced a series of textbooks and published significant research reports, such as the "Research on Legal Issues in Doctor-Patient Disputes", and has released the "Research Report on the Development of Chinese Legal Professional Education" and the "White Paper on the Development of Corporate Lawyers in China (2019)".
The research institutions under the Lawyer College include: the Art and Law Research Center, the Commercial Crime Research Center, the Judicial Practice (Weifang) Research Center, and the Public Sector and Corporate Lawyer Research Center.
Internationally, the college partners with renowned institutions, such as the University of Law in the UK, to offer LL.M. programs and has established the China-Mongolia Legal Research and Service Center together with the National University of Mongolia School of Law.
Establishing the Chinese Legal Education Alliance
In 2014 and 2015, the college hosted the first and second China Lawyers Education Forum, leading to the formation of the Chinese Legal Education Alliance. This alliance includes prominent institutions like Fudan University and the East China University of Political Science and Law. Members collaborate on legal education, research, and training, sharing resources to enhance China's legal education landscape.
Training Courses
The Lawyer College is committed to providing cutting-edge training in specialized legal fields. It has trained over 50,000 legal professionals nationwide, offering advanced seminars on topics such as criminal defense and international commercial arbitration. The college also supports public training programs for lawyers in Western China.
Alumni Association
The Lawyer College Alumni Association, guided by the RUC General Alumni Association and the RUC Law School Alumni Association, fosters connections among alumni and with the alma mater. With chapters across China, the association enhances the college's influence and supports the professional development of its members.
