A Swedish student's Xinjiang journey: Discovering harmony in diversity

"Seeing is believing. Only by being here can you feel how people of different ethnicities and traditions live and learn together in Xinjiang — so real, so beautiful."

Elliot Frennstedt, a Swedish undergraduate from the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China (RUC), felt captivated as he strolled through the alleys of Kashgar's ancient city in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

Elliot had long dreamed of visiting Xinjiang. A year into his studies in China, he finally traveled to this region where history and vitality converge. The distinctive architecture, lively bazaars, fresh pomegranate stalls and the warmth of the local residents left a lasting impression on him. "It felt like stepping onto the ancient Silk Road," he said.

Through his studies and friendships at RUC, Elliot had already met classmates from various ethnic backgrounds. But seeing Xinjiang firsthand, with its people running shops, preserving traditions and embracing modern life, gave him a deeper understanding of the Chinese concept of "harmony in diversity".

Elliot's connection with the Chinese language began at age 12. Gifted in languages, he now speaks fluent Mandarin and once won the first prize in the Swedish division of the "Chinese Bridge" competition. After his first trip to China in 2018, he set his sights on pursuing his university studies in China.

This dream came true in 2023, when he enrolled as an International Politics major at RUC. With strong support from his family, he has explored China both inside and outside the classroom.

Elliot also serves as a multilingual docent at the RUC Museum and has delivered speeches at events such as the Beijing Culture Forum. These experiences, he said, have strengthened his sense of belonging on campus and deepened his engagement with the Chinese culture and society.

"Over the past semesters, I've witnessed China's rapid development and the happiness of everyday life here," Elliot reflected. "In Xinjiang, I realized even more clearly that 'harmony in diversity' is not just a saying — it's something you can genuinely touch on this land."
