Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki Held Online Chinese Teacher Workshop
2021.03.23
On March 13th local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki held its annual Chinese teacher workshop online. Nearly 20 Chinese teachers in Finland participated the workshop. The theme of this year’s workshop was "Distant Teaching and Mentoring: Challenges, Practices and Solutions." Dr.Fanny Hedenborg, Professor of Learning Psychology at the University of Helsinki was the key speaker of this year’s workshop. In the workshop, Prof. Hedenborg talked about the problems students encountered and teachers’ reflections in distance learning, and the way to deal with the challenges brought by it. She conducted psychological activity analyses from the perspective of students and teachers, which enabled the teachers to better understand the origins of problems in online education. She then provided many practical suggestions for teachers: various communication methods with students, understanding students’ psychological dynamics, teachers' own psychological construction, classroom ice breaking and more group discussions in class. At the end of the workshop, participants had a group discussion on a typical case of distance teaching. The teachers used traffic light theory to discuss psychological problems encountered by students in the case, and summed up solutions based on their former teaching experience. The participating teachers expressed their hope to join in more similar training activities for a platform to communication among front-line Chinese teachers. The Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki has always been committed to helping local Chinese language teachers improve their language teaching skills, and will carry out more high-quality teacher training activities in the future.
