On May 23rd, more than 40 experts and scholars attended the Chinese version multi-volume publication of “(E. Zeller) A History of Greek Philosophy” academic seminar, which was co-sponsored by School of Philosophy of Renmin University of China, People's Publishing House and China Society for the History of Foreign Philosophy. “(E. Zeller) A History of Greek Philosophy” is a classic academic masterpiece in which the modern western academic circles conducted a comprehensive, systematic, scientific and professional study of ancient Greek philosophy.  It is of great scale, full and accurate data, rigorous method and profound argumentation, and has a milestone significance in the history of western ancient philosophy research.  The book has enjoyed a reputation in the international academia for more than a century and has been translated into English, French, Italian, Spanish and other languages so far.  The older generation of scholars in the Chinese language academia have been expecting the translation of this classic academic work into Chinese.  However, because the book contains a large number of original Greek documents and complicated academic footnotes, it is very difficult to translate.  Under the strong support of the high quality publishing power of People's Publishing House and the joint efforts of the translation team headed by Professor Nie Minli from the School of Philosophy of Renmin University of China, this multi-volume Chinese translation version was launched to the academic community this year. The Chinese version of this book was set up by the professional translation team, chaired by Professor Nie Minli, was finally published with 10 years of insistence. The team kept improving academic attitude, and eventually presented in six volumes and eight books, and more than three hundred words. The publication of this Chinese version, makes dreams of the generations of scholars come true, and will also have a positive influence and effect on promoting the mutual learning between Chinese and Western civilizations and deepening the study of ancient Greek philosophy in China. Professor Wu Fulai, Deputy Secretary of CPC of Renmin University of China, spoke highly of the academic status of “(E. Zeller) A History of Greek Philosophy”.  This set of history of philosophy is a glorious work in the history of philosophy world. Renmin University of China has always attached great importance to the translation of classical philosophical academic works and has an eminent academic tradition. The translation work for A History of Ancient Greek Philosophy has continued the sense of responsibility of Renming University. For building a great modern socialist country, philosophical research is needed to provide intellectual support. Xin Guangwei, editor-in-chief of People's Publishing House, said “(E. Zeller) A History of Greek Philosophy” was the world's first historical work of philosophy. The People's Publishing House, as the first publishing institution of the Communist Party of China, publishes important works on Chinese and Western philosophy, which will help promote philosophical education and research in China and promote mutual learning between Chinese and Western civilizations. Professor Zang Fengyu, dean of School of Philosophy of Renmin university of China, said that the Chinese version multi-volume publication of “(E. Zeller) A History of Greek Philosophy, promote the research level of the domestic scholars, like Mr. MiaoLi tian wrote in the preface of "the complete works of Aristotle”, ‘As a nation, we should continue to explore the cultural future and enrich the spiritual world. We should continue to seek the source of human civilization’. Zhao Dunhua, chair professor of Peking University, pointed out that the inheritance of ancient Greek studies in China has been passed on from generation to generation, and the new generation constantly adds more vitality to the old generation, keeping the tradition of ancient Greek philosophy in China for more than 100 years.  This monumental work, as a model, reflects the characteristics of the study of ancient Greek philosophy: first, meticulous textual research ;   Second, in the historical context, the explanations, distinguishes and synthesis of the empirical facts , are well done in a very detailed way. Professor Zhiwei Zhang of school of philosophy of Renmin University, Chairman of China Society for the History of Foreign Philosophy, cited Mr Wang Zisong inscription of the book, and reviewed the Chinese scholars and research work in western philosophy original translation, spoke highly of the great significance of the Chinese version of this book. In the academic session,  experts and scholars from various universities and research institutes , gave a full and fierce discussion around the publication of“(E. Zeller) A History of Greek Philosophy”, the Zeller’s research method and his status in the academic history, the present status and the future development of the ancient Greek research field, the meaning and value of the academic translation, the philosophy research value to explore, the influence of research of foreign philosophy to Chinese philosophy study.
