The Ninth Camphor Economist Circle (CEC) Conference was successfully held at Renmin University of China (RUC) from June 16 to 18, 2023. The conference is co-hosted by the Camphor Economics Academic Platform and the School of Economics of RUC, and co-organized by the China Economic Reform and Development Research Institute of RUC.
The conference focused on the theme of “High-level Socialist Market Economic System and Chinese Path to Modernization” and conducted in-depth discussions. More than 100 experts, scholars, teachers, and students attended. Supporting journals include The Journal of Quantitative & Technical Economics, Journal of China Economics, Review of Industrial Economics, Economic Theory and Business Management.
The conference has three parts: a tea party, an opening ceremony, and 16 parallel sub-forums. Guests were Liu Shouying, Dean of the School of Economics, RUC, Zheng Shilin, researcher of the Institute of Quantitative & Technical Economics, Zhang Shaohui, Deputy Dean of the International Economics and Trade, Nanjing University of Finance & Economics, Yu Chunhai, Deputy Dean of the School of Economics, RUC, Huang Wei, Associate Professor of the National School of Development, Peking University, Feng Yanling, Editor-in-chief of Review of Industrial Economic, etc.
The tea party was launched with the active participation of guests on the evening of June 16. Liu Shouying extended a warm welcome to all the guests. He noted that the future development of Chinese economics is concentrated on the younger generation of scholars. He added that young scholars should pay attention to establishing the paradigm of the entire Chinese economics and form original theories, to let the study of China issues become a mainstream topic in world economics.
Zheng Shilin mentioned in his speech that it is a very important attribute of the conference to bring together experts and scholars. Another important attribute is that the platform gives the opportunity to learn from their predecessors, enabling young scholars to pay attention to both internationalization and China issues while not forgetting their original aspirations.
At the tea party, all the guests spoke freely and jointly expressed their confidence and expectations for the future development of CEC.
The opening ceremony was officially held in Room 728, Mingde Building, RUC on the morning of June 17, which was presided over by Yu Chunhai. Focused on the vision and theme of this conference, Yu Chunhai proposed that the School of Economics of RUC will be committed to providing a high-level and professional academic exchange platform for domestic and foreign economists to improve the level of economic research in China.
Huang Wei announced the public selection process for the papers. And Feng Yanling announced the list of winners and issued certificates.
The award-winning English paper is Subjective Performance Evaluation Influence Activities and Work Behavior: Bureaucratic China written by Alain de Janvry, He Guojun, Elisabeth Sadoulet, Wang Shaoda, and Zhang Qiong (DOI: 10.1257/aer.20211207). After the opening ceremony, the sub-forums of the conference were held. Nearly a hundred experts and young scholars from all over the country attended the meeting. A total of 16 parallel sub-forums were set up for this year’s annual conference for guests to discuss and communicate. Scholars in each sub-forum carried out in-depth sharing and communication.
