In June 2023, based on the "Selection Method for Chinese Social Science Citation Index Source Journals (Collections)" released by the China Social Science Research Evaluation Center of Nanjing University, "The Historical Review of the Tang and Song Dynasties" was selected for inclusion in the CSSCI (2023-2024) journal collection.

"The Historical Review of the Tang and Song Dynasties" is a specialized academic collection focusing on the research and critique of Tang and Song history. It is jointly conducted by the Tang and Song History Research Center of Renmin University of China and the Zhejiang History Research Center of Zhejiang University City College. The chief editors are Bao Weimin and Liu Houbin. The journal was first published in 2015 and is now published biannually, with the eleventh issue recently released.

The Tang and Song periods represent a significant era of social and cultural transition in ancient Chinese history, following the changes after the Zhou and Qin Dynasties. The previous conditions since the Wei and Jin Dynasties and the new cultures from the Zhao and Song eras underwent transitions and solidifications during this time. The Tang Dynasty, with its prosperity, revitalized the decline of the previous nine dynasties, while the Song Dynasty brought civilization and rectified the decline of the world. The Tang and Song eras, while succeeding each other in time, also varied culturally. The unique characteristics and historical positioning of the Tang and Song demand a breakthrough from the previous isolated studies of Tang and Song histories. There's a need to establish a new perspective on "Tang and Song history" and to observe the transition between Tang and Song from a broader historical viewpoint. The establishment of the Tang and Song History Research Center at Renmin University of China, as well as the launch of "The Historical Review of the Tang and Song Dynasties", exemplifies this new approach to studying the Tang and Song histories.

This journal has been included in the CSSCI journal collection of Nanjing University, the CNI journal directory of the Social Science Literature Publishing House, and the list of excellent new creations of the Social Science Literature Publishing House. The journal primarily publishes problem-oriented research papers on Tang and Song history, as well as reviews and book critiques aimed at sorting out the academic history of Tang and Song studies. Article categories include research papers, book reviews, commentaries, discussions, and historical notes.
