Introduction of the seminar

With China regaining the consciousness of civilization, clarifying the order structure of Chinese civilization and its historical changes has become one of the fundamental issues in contemporary Chinese academia. Naturally, this task must be carried out in comparison with the types of civilizations in the world, both ancient and modern, especially the ancient and present exploration of Western civilization. Previously, the theories of Weber and Jaspers had been an important basis for our discussion, but in recent years, the translation of Voegelin's work has become a new stimulus. The important transformation of The Ecumenic Age as Voegelin's philosophy of order stems from his in-depth analysis of Chinese civilization, thus acknowledging that China, as an independent type of " Ecumenic " order, has abandoned the West-centered philosophy of order. It can be said that Voegelin's comparative civilization study is a new reference for us to understand our own civilization types, and it is also a new opportunity to digest, supplement and correct him, and ultimately aim to put forward a philosophy of order in line with our civilization tradition. At the same time, Professor Tang Wenming published his book "Extremely Clever and the Mean: Complementing Voegelin's Philosophical Analysis of the Order of Chinese Civilization", which made an important exploration in this respect.

In order to deeply explore the order types and historical processes of Chinese and Western civilizations, the Research Center for Political Philosophy of the School of Philosophy of Renmin University of China and the Research Center for Comparative Political Philosophy of Tsinghua University held an academic seminar on the order and history of Chinese and Western civilization and Extremely Bright and the Mean: Complementing Voegelin's Analysis of the philosophy of Order of Chinese Civilization book seminar
