Speaker: Liu Haoming

Liu Haoming, PhD in comparative literature from Yale University, Tenured Professor of Chinese and Japanese Language and Asian Studies at Vassar College, Visiting Scholar of Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Peking University. His research interests include ancient and modern Chinese and Western literature, German and English poetry and poetics of the 18th century.

Abstract:

Based on specific Chinese and Western classical texts, Professor Liu Haoming will make an analysis and comparison between Western and Chinese textual criticism. On the Western side, Professor Liu will elaborate on Lachmann method, showing the advantages of this method by analyzing specific examples of Pindar and Horatius texts, and the disadvantages of its abuse. On the Chinese side, Professor Liu will briefly summarize the history and current situation of the textual criticism on ancient texts, and show the differences between Chinese emendation practice and Western emendation practice with the example of the “Zuozhuan Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals. At the end of the lecture, Professor Liu will point out the strategies that should be adopted in the collation of ancient books in China to bridge the gap between the two traditions.
