Prosperity, Happiness and Long Life: China’s Gods and Order in the Middle Kingdom

The first lecture in the “Mingde Lecture Series” organized by Mingde College, as part of the “Global Dissemination of Chinese Civilization and Deep Dialogue with Human Civilizations” series of events, will be held on October 16. The keynote speaker for this lecture is Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer, Professor Emeritus of East Asian Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Göttingen. Yang Huilin, Professor at the School of Liberal Arts at Renmin University of China, will serve as the moderator. Professor Schmidt-Glintzer will examine the complex relationships between ancient Chinese religion, governance, and moral order from the perspective of a Western sinologist. He will illustrate how cultural traditions such as Chinese deities shaped societal values and maintained imperial order, particularly focusing on their influence on concepts of wealth, health, and longevity. Zhang Min, Assistant Professor at the German Department of the School of Foreign Languages at Renmin University of China, will provide on-site interpretation.


Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer, Professor Emeritus of East Asian Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Göttingen, is a German sinologist and author. He has taught at several universities including Bonn, Munich, Göttingen, Hamburg, and Hanover, and previously served as the Director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel. Since 2014, he has been Vice President of the International Confucian Association. He was awarded the Special Book Award of China in 2015, the Order of Merit (First Class) of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2021, and the Chinese Government Friendship Award in 2024. Professor Schmidt-Glintzer’s research fields include Chinese intellectual history, Buddhism, history, literature, and contemporary China. His notable works in German include Hongmingji, Ancient China, Modern China, Chinese Manichaeism, and Fu, Lu, Shou: China’s Gods and Order. The Chinese translation of his Comprehensive History of Chinese Literature, titled A History of Chinese Literature Written by a German, was published by Henan Literature and Art Publishing House in 2022.
