Introduction:
Bai Juyi's poetic and literary works had already been introduced to Japan during his lifetime and were deeply loved by Japanese literati of the time and subsequent generations. Alongside his works, several portraits of Bai Juyi were also transmitted to Japan, giving rise to multiple copies. This lecture will first explain the phenomenon and background of Bai Juyi's popularity in Japan, then analyze the Japanese national treasure "Landscape" housed in the Kyoto National Museum, as well as the "Shangchi Meeting Painting," to verify the fact that Bai Juyi's portraits were transmitted eastward and still exist in Japan.
