The course on the Origins of Chinese
Civilization Characteristics, as part of the series of lectures on Mutual
Learning between Chinese and Western Civilizations at Renmin University of
China, is about to take place. This session will primarily focus on
archaeological knowledge related to the origins of Chinese civilization
characteristics.
Across the vast stage of the world, diverse
civilizations have blossomed like radiant flowers—from
the floodplains of the Nile and Mesopotamia to the roaring Yangtze and Yellow
Rivers, and the shores of the Aegean Sea. Each civilization, with its unique
forms and achievements, illuminates the brilliance of human wisdom.
Archaeology, the "key to time," allows us to explore the origins of
civilizations, unlock subterranean epics, and decode the genetic code of
Chinese civilization. How did a 5,000-year-old civilization coalesce from
scattered sparks into a unifying flame? How did diverse cultures endure the
crucible of "inclusivity" through collision and fusion? And how did
the intricate threads of pluralism weave the "peaceful" tapestry of
civilization? Answers to these questions not only hold profound significance
for the Chinese nation itself but also showcase its splendid achievements and
extraordinary contributions to human civilization.
In the first lecture of this course, join
Professor Chen Shengqian as we embark on an archaeological voyage to trace the
origins of civilization. Discover how a single grain of rice grew into the
towering tree of Eastern civilization, and listen as jade, bronze, and iron
recount the earliest narrative of a "pluralistic unity" in
state-building.

Course Overview
The Chinese civilization, renowned for its
continuity, peacefulness, and inclusivity, spans millennia on a grand scale.
Why did such characteristics emerge? How did they originate, and how do they
shape us today? These questions resonate deeply with every Chinese individual
and have been explored across disciplines. Archaeology, with its unparalleled
temporal scope and solid foundation in material remains, offers a fresh
perspective for understanding our cultural identity. Join us in tracing the
origins of these defining traits of Chinese civilization and envisioning its
future amid historical trends.
