2013.05.30
On May 28, 2013, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD paid a visit to Renmin University of China and delivered a speech on the issue of economic globalization.  Born in Thailand, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi had studied in Europe and received his master's and doctoral degrees in Netherlands School of Economics which was later renamed Erasmus Universitiet Rotterdam. Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi possesses rich working experience. In 1994, as Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister he was in charge of Thailand's economic and trade policies. Before assuming this position, he was Director-General of World Trade Organization. With his cultural background, economic theory and experience in political career, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi is endowed with a profound insight into economic globalization.  In his speech, he took China’s leap-forward development in globalization as an example to affirm the positive significance exerted by economic globalization and its inevitability. At the same time, he stressed that the process of globalization is by no means perfect, but full of hidden worries: the world is shrouded in the haze of deflation due to global economic recession; it’s difficult for some developing countries to cope with the challenges from developed countries because of blind trade liberalization and rapid integration into world market; there is a lack of worldwide financial regulation so financial risk is shared by all sectors in post-crisis era. In order to solve these problems mentioned above, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi opined that we should enhance international cooperation and reach multilateral agreements so economic globalization could have a positive influence on world stage.  Before the speech, Vice President Yin Zhihong met with Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, briefed him on RUC’s course setting, disciplinary advantage and satisfactory ranking. Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi expressed his appreciation for the achievements and willingness of cooperation with RUC.
