RUC holds the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of its School of Agricultural Economics

rd of November, the fifth Chinese Economic Security Forum “New View of Food Security in the Current Economic and Social Situation,” was held on RUC’s campus and served to commemorate the founding of the School of Agricultural Economics 60 years ago and the founding of its successor, the School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, 10 years ago.
The fifth Chinese Economic Security Forum was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education Social Science Development Research Center and the School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development. RUC President Chen Yulu and Ministry of Education Social Science Development Research Center Director Yang He both spoke at the opening ceremony. Deputy Head and Director of the Office of the Central Rural Working Leading Group and Honorary President of the Rural Development Institute Chen Xiwen, Hebei former Political Commissar of the Military Major General JiYaocheng, China Academy of Social Sciences Vice President Cai Fang, Executive Vice Chairman of the University Council Zhang Jianming, and many other esteemed guests as well as alumni, students, and community representatives made up the more than 1,200 participants.
President Chen congratulated the department on its 60 years of efforts and achievements and thanked all of the students, staff, and alumni for their diligent work at the forefront of agricultural development. He pointed out that for a long time, the School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Developmenthas created a large number of outstanding scientific achievements, has trained more than more than 7,000 students to help incontinuing the prosperity of China's agricultural situation, and has made an outstanding contribution to the nation’s agricultural and rural development.
President Chen said that in today’s world, food security, energy security, and financial security are the three main components of economic security. With a booming population, accelerating industrialization and urbanization has a major effect on food security. Food security is not only a necessary condition for achieving fast and healthy economic development, but also for promoting a stable and harmonious society and providing a foundation for our national security strategy. Because of this, academic circles must focus more attention on this issue.
Direct Yang He also congratulated the School of Agricultural Economics for reaching this 60-year milestone. He said that food security is related to our country’s economic development, social stability, and political autonomy. This year’s forum explores the current status of our food security situation, the challenges to come, and the possible solutions and strategies for combating these challenges.
Professor Tang Zhong of the School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development thanked the successive leadership for their contributions to the development of this field of study and acknowledged how instrumental the previous generation of scholars has been in building knowledge in this field. He pointed out that the School has a deep history of accumulated wisdom, with many generations of scholars who have poured their heart and soul into their research. He said that all of the faculty and students must carry on this tradition of pride in the School and the importance of the work that is done here so that the School will continue to make new contributions to the field of agricultural economics and rural development.
Scholars spanning three generations gave symposiums on themes including: “Food security in China under current circumstances: challenges and countermeasures,” “Food security issues in China,” and “The three stages and characteristics of agricultural development.”
Undergraduate and graduate education on Agricultural Economics began at RUC in 1950. In 1954, the School of Agricultural Economics was established by the Economics Department. In 2004, the successor to this school was created under the name of The School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development.
