Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies Organises “The CPC in Dialogue with the World 2016” Economics Round Table
2016.10.20
On the 14
th of October, the International Liaison Department of the CCCPC in conjunction with Chongqing’s Municipal Party Committee hosted the event “The CPC in Dialogue with the World 2016” in Chongqing, attended by more than 300 representatives from over 70 political parties from more than 50 countries around the world. The topic for the conference was “Innovation in Global Economic Governance: Initiatives and Actions of Political Parties.” President of Renmin University, LIU Wei attended the conference, and the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (CIFS) think-tank organised and took part in the session “Economists Roundtable: Global Governance and China’s Development.”
During the proceedings President LIU Wei spoke of some of the most pressing issues facing the system of global economic governance today, such as how at present the world was in the economic doldrums, and how the potential for growth in developed nations was particularly low. Moreover, multilateralism was on the decline in favour of so-called “minilateralism,” putting the system of global trade in a dangerous position. He also noted that progress towards reforming global governance mechanisms was stagnating as developed and developing nations were unable to come to an agreement in this matter. In this kind of difficult situation, he continued, China proposed structural reform as typified by the “belt and road” initiative, and such novel ideas in the realm of global governance and development had the potential to open up for the world a new phase of globalisation that is more fair and just, and of benefit to all. President LIU then indicated that Renmin University, as a key figure in social science research, has produced much fruitful research with regards politics, governance and economics, and that our Institutes of National Development and Strategic Studies, and of course the CIFS have all become acclaimed think-tanks in both China and the world. He closed by affirming that henceforth they will work together with global leaders and think-tanks for the purpose of driving improvements in the calibre of global governance.
The CIFS has for a long time devoted itself to research in global economic governance. The rationality behind holding and participating in the “Economists Roundtable: Global Governance and Chinese Development” is to bring together political leaders, leading economists and academics from global think-tanks, so as to conduct vital analyses on such topics as “global economic governance and China’s contribution” and “the role of China after the Hangzhou G20.” These discussions are crucial in order to gather the opinions and ideas of these experts on global economic governance and China’s future development, and will doubtless make a significant contribution to addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the world today. The CIFS was established on the 19
th of January 2013, with the assistance of a generous donation of 200 million RMB from Renmin University alumnus and Board Chair of the Shanghai Chongyang Investment Management Company, Mr QIU Guogen.
As a local Chinese think-tank, CIFS provides a service to the people in its work that keeps pace with trends in finance, scrutinises academic works, follows global trends, and synthesises this knowledge to provide advice to the nation’s leaders. The CIFS consists of 96 highly capable researchers who are former government representatives, bankers, and famous academics from over 10 countries, and has launched substantial collaborative arrangements with think-tanks from over 30 countries.
At present, The CIFS has been an active participant in the Think 20 (T20) summits. It has also been included in the internationally recognised University of Pennsylvania “Global Go To Think-Tank Report” as one of the top 150 think-tanks world-wide for two years running.
