On the 21st of October, the seventh session of the “Sino-Russian High Level Economics Forum,” organised in cooperation with Renmin University and St. Petersburg State University of Economics, was held at the Guo Xue Guan at Renmin University. Some of the notable attendees of the conference were former member of the State Council and Chairman of the Sino-Russian Committee for Friendship, Peace and Development DAI Bingguo, President of Renmin University LIU Wei, Rector of St. Petersburg State University of Economics Igor A. Maksimtsev as well as present and former officials from the Russian embassy in Beijing. The conference was presided over by the Director of the Renmin University-St. Petersburg State University of Economics Russian Research Centre, and Council Chairman of the Economics Department GUAN Xueling. 1 President LIU Wei’s address began with him expressing a warm welcome to all attendees representing their institutions, governments and businesses from both countries. During his address he also touched on the history of the forum, including the history of the intercollegiate Russian Research Centre. He noted that events such as the forum were of great significance in promoting strategic cooperation in the fields of economics and trade, and that this forum would provide a platform for the cross-pollination of ideas between the two nations. He continued by pointing out that one of the best advantages of this kind of forum is the way it connects economic theories to trade practices by bringing together academics and government officials. Following on this notion, he noted that as there are representatives from the business community of China and Russia, they have a great opportunity to come together to consider how our two nations can develop trade in the present system where there is a shift in global governance. In this way, we can establish connections between businesses in both nations, bringing the theoretical and the pragmatic together in order to facilitate the development of economics and trade in our two nations. In closing, he stated his wish that this forum would encourage continued growth in the Sino-Russian relationship, create fertile grounds for the development of knowledge and academic relationships, and generate channels for both countries to share policy ideas, to strengthen connections between the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “Eurasian Economic Union.” 2 Rector Igor A. Maksimtsev followed with his address, highlighting the strengthening of political ties and trust between China and Russia, the strengthening of academic ties, and of the history of academic collaboration between RUC and St. Petersburg State University of Economics. He expressed hope that bringing together some of the finest academics and leaders of the two countries would lead to many great academic and political achievements. He concluded by expressing his hope that with the hard work of both sides, they can consolidate connections between the businesses of both nations, as well as a strengthening and deepening of academic links between the two universities, manifesting in a new and meaningful strategic partnership between China and Russia. 3 Prior to the forum, President LIU Wei got together with a group of leaders and representatives from St. Petersburg State University of Economics to chat about topics of mutual interest. During these conversations they noted how the Sino-Russian friendship has a long history; in the 50s, the RUC School of Economics and School of Planning was established with the assistance of academics from the former USSR, at that time there were many scholars from the USSR teaching at RUC, establishing a firm foundation for such cooperative events as this forum. 9 %e5%b0%a4%e9%87%91%e5%a8%9c%e5%89%af%e6%9c%ac On the afternoon the forum divided into three mini-fora, with the 6 chief topics being considered “Building Cooperative Links between The Silk Road Economic Belt and the Eurasian Economic Union”; “Methods and Repercussions of Establishing a Comprehensive Partnership Between Europe and Asia”; “Researching into the Question of Deepening Sino-Russian Business Cooperation”; “China, Russia, and the New System of Global Economic Governance”; “The Question of Economic System Transformation in China and Russia”; and “How to “Optimise and Upgrade” Sino-Russian Cooperation in Economics and Trade.” During each of the fora academics from both sides engaged in lively debate on all the topics under consideration. The “Sino-Russian High-Level Economics Forum” was first held in 2002, and has developed to this day to become an important event on the academic calendar, and one of the core collaborative projects between Renmin University and St. Petersburg State University of Economics. It has also become a key event in furthering the healthy development of the Sino-Russian economic and trade relationship, being a fantastic platform for promoting cooperative partnerships between both nations. Prior to this forum there have been six fora held between Beijing and St Petersburg. %e5%90%88%e5%bd%b1%e5%89%af%e6%9c%ac On the 2nd of September 2015, the Renmin University of China-St. Petersburg State University of Economics Russian Research Centre at RUC was established.
