Renmin University Convenes Meeting on Evaluating and Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education
2016.10.27
On the morning of the 21
st of October, RUC held the 2016 session of the annual meeting on the assessment of undergraduate education. The meeting was attended by President LIU Wei, and Vice President HONG Dayong presided over the meeting. Also in attendance were the leaders of RUC’s many departments, schools and centres.
The meeting began with a speech by President LIU, who emphasised the importance of data collection in ensuring quality education for each university department. He stated that with these data, we are able to elicit the educational needs of our students, and in this way we are able to develop our resources in ways that meet those needs. These data enable us to systematically and comprehensively reflect on our work as educators, to better foster the needs of our talented students, and to better understand any potential issues so that we may address them as they arise, with a focus on our development. At the same time, by integrating data from every department, we are able to increase the level of informatisation of our University, in line with our stated aims. It is also important to note that this task is not only of great importance, but it requires a lot of hard work on the part of staff. This work of gathering of statistical data is time constrained, difficult, and specialised work that requires diligence on part of our leadership team, however I have complete faith that we can take on this difficult task, tackling it earnestly and with great rigour, ensuring the accuracy, efficacy, assiduousness and timely completion of our data collection work.

Following President LIU’s speech, Vice President HONG also said a few words, reemphasising the main points of LIU’s talk, stressing that data collection is critical to the University’s mandate to deliver high quality education to its students, and how important it is for all university leaders to ensure the accuracy and quality of the data collection work.

The data collection work is conducted in accordance with the requirements of improving the quality of higher education promulgated by the Ministry of Education.
It also follows the wishes of China’s leaders to cater education to the needs of students, to create a high-quality learning environment, and to develop the abilities of educators. These are some of the means by which the RUC will improve its ability to foster the development of talented students, guarantee quality education, and pursue constant improvement.
Some of the processes targeted by this work include: ability of teachers, teaching resources, training and development processes, student development, quality guarantees and course quality; these measures will serve to improve the status of the university, increase the quality and level of investment in teaching, and assess fees and facilities. Also under assessment are the ability of the university to produce and to meet societal need for quality graduates, the teaching and learning conditions of the students, and general student satisfaction.
In 2006, RUC passed the first grade evaluation for its outstanding achievements in undergraduate education. RUC aims to pass this assessment again at the end of 2017.
