2016.11.21
On the 15
th of November, the 2016 World Junior Taekwondo Championships was held in Canada, with over 900 entrants from 102 countries around the world competing. RUC Sports Department Coach WU Jingyu, who lead the Junior Taekwondo team to Canada, is a member of the Chinese Olympic Committee and is also a two-time Olympic gold medal winner (2008, 2012). The competition ran until the 20
th of November.
Coach WU arrived at RUC in 2014, since which she has utilised her professional skills to foster enthusiasm and engage her students, becoming popular amongst the students as their “Gen Y” physical education coach. At the same time, she also attends many international competitions as both a member of the Chinese national team and as a coach. She competed in the Rio Olympics in August this year, coming in seventh place. Three months later, she again was called upon by the national team, to lead the National Junior Taekwondo team to attend this year’s international junior competition. Twelve years ago in 2004, WU Jingyu attended the international junior competition in Korea, where she took home China’s first ever gold medal at this prestigious contest, also marking the beginning of her auspicious career in Taekwondo. Twelve years later, WU Jingyu has taken out championships and gold medals in every international taekwondo competition, to date the only taekwondo practitioner to achieve such a feat.
In her capacity as coach, WU Jingyu expressed her delight at being able to lead the junior team to the international competition, as it enabled her to impart her many years of experience to the next generation of athletes, helping them learn and grow, and become better athletes. She hopes that everyone in the team are able to let off some steam, do their best, and do their country proud.
This year in December, the 2016 Taekwondo World Cup will be held in Azerbaijan, but Coach WU has decided not to attend due to her commitments to her students who will be preparing for final examinations at the time.
