On the 11^th of December, the “2016 Beijing Postgraduate Student Spoken English Competition” finals were held at Beijing Jiaotong University. Participants selected by the RUC School of Foreign Languages all performed marvellously, taking out top class as well as first and second class prizes. Master’s Student majoring in Journalism and Communication at the School of Journalism HAN Lang took out top prize at the competition with the most points, while School of International Studies Master’s student JIANG Yiming and Commerce Master’s student AN Huishan received first and second class prizes respectively. The theme of the competition was “My Role Models.” The competition was well-attended by RUC postgraduate students as both participants and audience, with over 20 students enrolling to compete in the first heat on campus at RUC on the 19^th of November. HAN Lang and YAO Yao from the School of Journalism, AN Huishan from the School of Commerce, JIANG Yiming from the School of International Studies, ZHANG Enhui from the School of Information Resource Management, and GU Tong from the School of Economics all came to the fore with their outstanding performances and were thus selected to compete at the next round on the 4^th of December held at three different locations around Beijing. During preparations for the intermediary and final rounds, the Postgraduate English Education Department from RUC’s School of Foreign Languages worked hard in preparing the students, training them and assisting them to ensure they were fully ready for the competition. After undergoing such thorough and comprehensive preparations YAO Yao, ZHANG Enhui and GU Tong received excellence awards, while HAN Lang, JIANG Yiming and AN Huishan took out the top three spots out of eighty competitors, progressing to the finals, and making RUC the most represented University in the competition. During the finals, HAN Lang received the top score from both the judges and the audience for her outstanding speech content, clear English pronunciation, and quick-witted and composed responses. JIANG Yiming and AN Huishan’s speeches, taking their parents as their role models, deeply moved the audience and earned them first and second class prizes respectively.

  RUC student’s performances in this competition have been consistently improving over the last three years, so far receiving two top class prizes, three first class prizes, and one second class prize. This year’s performance was the best so far with prize winners represented in all categories, which is also the best achievement for any University in China.
