Prof. YAN Lianke Was Awarded the 7th Newman Prize for Chinese Literature

On March 10th, the 7th Newman Prize for Chinese Literature was awarded to YAN Lianke, Professor of the RUC School of Liberal Arts and a famous Chinese writer. Commissioned by the organizer of the Newman Prize, Prof. CHEN Jianlan, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, awarded the Prize to Prof. YAN at RUC Yifu Hall.
Following MO Yan, HAN Shaogong and WANG Anyi, Prof. YAN is the fourth mainland Chinese winner of the Newman Prize. Due to the outbreak of covid-19, the University of Oklahoma commissioned RUC School of Liberal Arts to host the award ceremony, which will be broadcast at the online international celebration of the University of Oklahoma Norman campus on March 18th.
Prof. Scott Fritzen, Dean of David L. Boren College of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma, congratulated Prof. YAN via video message.
Prof. Jonathan Stalling, Director of the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature, spoke highly of Prof, YAN's unique works and his contributions to world literature in his congratulatory video.
Prof. CHEN presented a comprehensive introduction of Prof. YAN as an "internationally renowned contemporary Chinese writer." He mentioned in particular that since Prof. YAN joined the RUC School of Liberal Arts, he has actively established the International Writing Center, set up the creative writing program, and trained a number of influential young writers domestic and abroad. The creative writing program at the School of Liberal Arts has played a key role in creative writing education in China.
Prof. YAN delivered his acceptance speech "A Village Bigger than the World." He firmly believed that "literature must be like one’s hometown" and insisted on "hometown creation."
Founded in 2008 by the Institute for U.S.-China Issues at the University of Oklahoma, the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature is awarded biennially in recognition of outstanding achievement in prose or poetry that best captures the human condition, and is conferred solely on the basis of literary merit. The Prize honors Harold J. and Ruth Newman, whose generosity enabled the establishment of the OU Institute for US-China Issues.
