“The Belt and Road of Knowledge” Forum Was Held in Dunhuang

On April 22-23rd, “The Belt and Road of Knowledge” Forum was Held in Dunhuang. The forum was co-organized by Renmin University of China, University of Padua and the People’s Government of Dunhuang Municipality. Experts and scholars gathered in Dunhuang to discuss the research, protection and restoration of cultural heritage under the vision of the “One Belt and One Road Initiative.” Nearly 100 audiences watched the opening ceremony online. RUC Vice President Prof. DU Peng hosted the opening ceremony. Prof. JIN Nuo, Chairwoman of the RUC University Council, delivered a welcoming speech at the opening ceremony. She pointed out that as two ends of the ancient silk road, China and Italy share a grand mission of civilization inheritance and innovation. The protection and management of cultural heritage is a major subject for the two countries, and she believed that the forum would promote the research on cultural heritage in the related countries and even in the academic circles around the world. She hoped that the forum would further enhance the cross-cultural understanding and dialogue between Chinese civilization and other civilizations. RUC President LIU Wei delivered a speech via video. He pointed out that Renmin University of China and the University of Padua have maintained in-depth collaborations since the establishment of their partnership. He also pointed out that digital technologies should be applied to promote exchanges and dialogue among different civilizations. Prof. Rosario Rizuto, President of the University of Padua, delivered an online address. He said that universities shoulder the important mission of spreading knowledge, serving society and training the younger generation, and should encourage cross-border academic exchanges to create an open research environment. This forum was not only a symbol of the friendly development of Sino-Italian relations, but also a witness to the strategic partnership between Renmin University and the University of Padua. He believed that the forum would promote the inheritance and protection of cultural heritage and inspire the formulation of relevant policies in the future. Mr. ZHANG Xiulin, Vice Mayor of Jiuquan Municipality, delivered a welcome speech. Ms. Stefania Comenia, representative of the Italian Embassy to China, congratulated the opening of the forum. Prof. FENG Huiling from Renmin University of China delivered her keynote speech "Digital Conservation: The God of Life of Contemporary Cultural Heritage." Mr. CHEN Yanren, Head of Dunhuang Municipality, provided a keynote speech “Dunhuang and the Spirit of Silk Road.” Prof. Jacopo Bonetto from University of Padua provided his online keynote speech “Research and Valorization in Cultural Heritage: from Universities to Communities along the Silk Road.” The two-day forum was held both online and offline. The forum was divided into four sessions: Cultural Heritage and Research, Preservation and Valorization; Protection of Cultural Heritage from the Perspective of Law and Policies; The Meaning of Cultural Heritage; Cultural Heritage Restoration Technology. Experts and scholars from top universities in China, Italy and other countries along the Silk Road were invited to discuss on the integration and mutual learning of eastern and western civilizations. The forum was supported by Dunhuang Culture Institute, the Academic Association for International Cultural Exchange, and China-Europe Education Alliance for Humanities and Arts. During the forum, China Renmin University Press held a themed book exhibition to show relevant achievements in the publishing field.
