The Eighth World Conference on Sinology 2023 will be held at Renmin University of China (Suzhou Campus) on November 4th-6th. The conference will focus on the theme of “Understanding China: Connected Past and Shared Future”, contributing to academic exchange, knowledge sharing and personnel training as an important platform of the Belt and Road Initiative of Knowledge.
Sinology, also known as Chinese Studies, enjoys a long history. In 2007, China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (Now called Center for Language Education and Cooperation) worked together with Renmin University of China to host the 1st World Conference on Sinology which featured “Dialogues of Civilizations and a Harmonious World”.
In the past 16 years, World conference on Sinology has been successfully held for seven sessions. Despite the uncertain world economic and political structure, Chinese and overseas scholars keep promote mutual understanding through dialogue. Nowadays, World Conference on Sinology has become a significant link between Chinese indigenous academic research and overseas Sinology studies and a high-end academic platform of promoting ‘New Sinology’ and cultivating young talents.

In the uncertain world situation, all nations and civilizations need more mutual understanding than ever before. The original purpose of the World Conference on Sinology is that people can have a deeper understanding about their own cultures through communication with other cultures, thus knowing the world better. It is also the exact meaning of Sinologies and the only way to build a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind.
The aim of the World Conference on Sinology is to promote contemporary succession of traditional Sinology, and push forward the communication between Chinese academic research and Overseas Sinology. In this way, cultures can inherit the essence of traditional Sinology while being adapted to contemporary cultural context. They can absorb the essence of both Chinese culture and western culture as well.
In the case of being each other’s “the Other”, different civilizations promote understanding through dialogue, respect differences through understanding and achieve harmony through differences. Scholars are expected to connect China and the world, the past and the future through the communication in Sinology research.
