In 2024, the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, 21 students from Yale University came to China and had a dialogue with 26 students from Renmin University of China(RUC)to inject energy into China-U.S. relations.
This is the third round of the “Yale-Renmin Student Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technologies and China-U.S. Relations”. This event realized “face-to-face” offline communication, with a total of 15 teachers from both universities providing guidance. The participating students come from diverse professional backgrounds, including international relations, computer science, finance, law, journalism, artificial intelligence, psychology and so on.
Yang Guangbin, Dean of the School of International Studies at RUC, Arne Wetsad, Director of the International Security Program at Yale University, Li Chen, Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at RUC, Ted Wittenstein, Executive Director of the Schmidt AI and Emerging Technologies Program at Yale University, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.
The core of this cross-national youth dialogue event lies in the voices and perspectives of the young generation. In order to promote an in-depth communication among students, the activity employed a format of “fixed student groups with rotating teacher guidance”. While referred to as instructors, the teachers themselves minimized their own presence and wholeheartedly entrusted the leadership of the discussions to the students.
The topic of the dialogue centered around China-U.S. relations, but the scope of the discussion extended beyond the two countries, embracing a global perspective. As the world continues to develop and interconnect, numerous significant issues transcend national boundaries and require collective solutions. Throughout the dialogue, students from both universities were surprised to discover the many shared challenges faced by China and the United States, which also revealed vast opportunities for cooperation.
Despite the diversity of cultures, religions, races, etc., human beings are bound by a shared destiny. During their visit, the Yale students had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the cultural heritage and academic atmosphere of RUC. They eagerly anticipate more American students coming to China and visiting RUC, fostering greater exchange and dialogue between the two nations.
