The inauguration ceremony of the Chenghai Institute for Global Development and Security (Shenzhen) at Renmin University of China (RUC) took place alongside the first Global Industry Development and Security Forum under the theme "New Patterns of Global Development and Emerging International Security Challenges” on Sep. 19.

The event was held in Shenzhen's Qianhai district and brought together key figures from various fields.

The institute was established through the generous donation of Ye Chenghai, an RUC alumnus and founder of Sinopharm Group. It aims to become a high-level think tank focused on global development and security, utilizing Shenzhen's experience in emerging technologies to foster academic research and interdisciplinary collaboration. The platform will also contribute to the development of the Greater Bay Area and China’s role as a global leader in innovative fields.

Lin Shangli, RUC President, emphasized the institute’s role in supporting China’s national strategies, particularly in fostering innovation, education, and talent development. He noted that the Chenghai Institute would become a driving force for China’s intellectual influence on the world stage, contributing to global development and security research.

Former President of the Chinese Writers Association, Qian Xiaoqian, congratulated the institute on its establishment and highlighted the importance of advancing China’s voice in international discussions, particularly in addressing global challenges like security, economic growth, and governance.

Ye Chenghai reflected on his time at Renmin University, stating that it had profoundly shaped his worldview. He expressed hope that the Chenghai Institute would enhance China’s global discourse power.

During the event, a series of keynote speeches were delivered. These included remarks from Guo Weimin, President of the Chinese Public Relations Association, who discussed the need to strengthen China’s international communication strategies. Yu Hongjun, former Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC, highlighted the importance of multilateralism in global diplomacy. Additionally, Zhu Guangyao, former Vice Minister of Finance, underscored the role of multilateral cooperation in addressing global economic recovery and climate change.

As the institute moves forward, it is expected to play a key role in international research, exploring topics such as global supply chain security and the protection of overseas business interests. This new platform reflects RUC’s commitment to global development and the advancement of international academic collaboration.
