The
"New Energy and Global Climate Agenda" Forum was held on October
19th. As one of the sub-forums of the Tongzhou Global Development Forum (2024)
hosted by Renmin University of China (RUC), it is organized by the School of
Applied Economics of RUC, Southern Power Grid Energy Development Research
Institute, and Southern Power Grid Digital Media Technology Co., Ltd.
Zheng Xinye, Vice President of RUC, delivered the opening speech for the sub-forum. He pointed out that the world is facing dual challenges of energy transformation and climate warming. Countries should focus on issues like transformation on technology, optimal policy combinations, and intergenerational fairness based on national conditions.
“There is an urgent need to strengthen research and exchange cooperation to provide support for better decision-making by businesses, families, and governments, and to achieve win-win cooperation for all parties.” Zheng emphasized in his speech.
Zheng mentioned that RUC, as the host of the Tongzhou Global Development Forum, first proposed original concepts such as the "Comprehensive Development Goals for Humanity 2050 (CDGs2050)", providing Chinese-style original thinking and suggestions for the United Nations' global sustainable development agenda from the perspective of a new type of think tank.
Ling Wen, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineer, delivered a keynote speech titled "Sustainable Development and China's Green Energy Transformation". He said that China has made significant progress in promoting green energy transformation, but still faces multiple challenges in the future. Ling Wen called for the promotion of high-quality development of the new energy industry through technological innovation and industrial policy guidance.
Nobuo Tanaka, former Director General of the International Energy Agency, gave a speech titled "Losers and Winners in the International Energy and Climate Crisis", sharing the latest dynamics of global new energy policies, and proposed that countries need to further strengthen policy coordination and cooperation to jointly address the global climate change challenge.
Zhang Mianrong, Party Secretary and Chairman of the Southern Power Grid Energy Development Research Institute, made a speech titled "Promoting High-Quality Development of New Energy and Promoting Green and Low-Carbon Transformation". Deeply analyzing the development path of China's new energy industry against the backdrop of global climate change, Zhang concluded that high-quality development of new energy is the only way to deal with climate change. Through technological innovation and policy guidance, China can play a leading role in the development of new energy globally.
Robert Weisenmiller, Former Director General of the International Energy Agency Nobuo Tanaka and former Chairman of the California Energy Commission, shared the "California Energy Policy for Climate Change Response", detailing California's policy experience in new energy development and climate change response, providing a useful reference for global new energy development.
Song Feng released a research report titled "Responding to Global Climate Change with High-Quality Development of the Energy Industry". The report emphasizes the need to cultivate new quality productive forces in the energy field, and to accelerate the comprehensive transformation from traditional energy to low-carbon, intelligent, and sustainable energy. The report provides a clear path of action for decision-makers, businesses, and research institutions in the energy industry, and provides a Chinese solution for global climate governance.
In the roundtable discussion, domestic and international energy experts discussed about “The Evolution Path and Challenges of the New Energy System", "New Energy Development and Regional Economic Coordination", and "China's New Energy Industry and Cooperation with Global Southern Countries".
The participating experts unanimously believed that promoting global energy transformation requires the joint efforts of technological innovation, policy support, and global cooperation, especially in the current urgent situation of global climate change, the development of new energy is the key way to address this challenge.
The holding of this sub-forum pointed out the direction for further strengthening international cooperation and promoting the high-quality development of the new energy industry. The participants expressed that they will continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the field of new energy in the future, and jointly contribute wisdom and strength to address global climate change.
