Abstract:

The rise of e-commerce stands as a landmark development in China’s economy over the past two decades. Yet, it represents more than just a new market or technology—it illuminates an enduring theme in human history: the relationship between institutions and markets. Simultaneously, it offers a critical lens through which to examine the evolution of China's economic transformation. In this lecture, Dr. Liu Lizhi will present findings from her new book, From Click to Boom: The Political Economy of E-commerce in China (Princeton University Press, 2024). Drawing on over a decade of research, she will share insights based on extensive firsthand interviews, survey data, and rare access to corporate internal records, alongside a randomized controlled trial conducted across three provinces. Her work explores the institutional foundations and far-reaching implications of China’s e-commerce market.
