Renmin University implements undergraduate talent training roadmap

RUC pep rally was held on April the 22nd to launch the program of undergraduate talent training roadmap and to establish a research-oriented education system within the University.  Jin Nuo, Chairman of University Council and Chen Yulu, President of RUC attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Attended the meeting were RUC leadership including Vice President Niu Weilin, Executive Vice President Feng Huiling, Deputy Secretary of CPC RUC Party Committee Ma Junjie, , Deputy Secretary Of RUC Party Committee And Vice-President Wang Liming, Vice President Yang Huilin, and first grade professor Hu Naiwu, together with faculty representatives and students from schools. RUC officially launched a new talent training roadmap in 2012. After thorough consultation and discussion, the framework of such roadmap was formed. Based on the principle of “educating with morality”, the roadmap focuses on a research-oriented studying system which aims to establish a perfect talent training program to promote students to learn real knowledge, discover real problems, conduct real research and propose correct opinions, so as to forge ahead in times. Secretary Jin Nuo said in the meeting that undergraduate talent training reform is a key topic in China’s current tertiary education reform, involving the fundamental issues of college education. As a comprehensive, research-based university, RUC takes the lead in such reform owing to its education feature, teaching tradition and qualified subject resources. It is of great significance to explore great changes from the aspect of teaching and studying methods. She said, talent training is a long-term systemic program. Undergraduate talent training roadmap combines tradition, reform and development, with the focus on resource collection and guarantee. It is practical in the long run and vital for the current and future sustainable development of the school. She urged the faculty and students to work together and promote this great cause. President Chen Yulu expressed deep appreciation to the devotion and efforts of all faculty and students for the roadmap. He said that talent training is the core mission of a university, and improving the quality of education is the top priority of RUC’s ten-year development plan. To formulate the roadmap, we must firstly answer the question “what kind of talent training system is required by China’s research-oriented university”. He emphasized that it was a long-term and arduous process to deepen the reform of talent training system and realize the transformation of the current pattern of tertiary education, which required consensus of the school, strong determination, overall grasp, and steady pace. Implementing the roadmap requires cooperation from all schools and departments, support of all teachers and participation of all students. Currently, we need to handle the relationship of seven aspects: relationship between tradition, reform and development; between teaching and cultivating; between education and research; between the basic skill training and question orientation; between major subjects and cross-subjects study; between studying inside and outside class and the relationship between determination and pace of reform. Vice-president Yang Huilin reported the framework of the roadmap. Vice-president and deputy-secretary Wang Liming reported affairs concerning teacher promotion. Professor Guo Qingwang, Dean of School of Finance, Professor Du Xiaoyong, Dean of School of Information And Computer Science, Professor Liu Rui, Deputy Dean of school of economics, and Professor Wangyi, Deputy Dean of Law School introduced experience and practices in their respective  school. Professor Hu Naiwu shared his personal thoughts about educating and combining educating and cultivating. Vice President Niu Weilin, announced the decision of “establishing undergraduate talent training committee” and members of the first committee. Jin Nuo and Chen Yulu issued the letter of appointment to members of the first talent training committee. To ensure the implementation of the roadmap, RUC specially established the talent training committee and formulated 2013 undergraduate education plan, and moderated requirements of evaluation and employment of professional titles. As a special committee paralleling to school academic committee, degree evaluation committee, the committee was chaired by the University Council Chairman and the University President, and focuses on major problems, trend in talent training and proposing suggestions for decision making. Meanwhile, the committee is in charge of approving talent training plan, management plan and major awards and punishment. The committee also gives instruction in student recruitment, subject building, course design, teaching material, teaching facilities, teacher training, and student management.  According to related polices, schools will evaluate classroom instruction, quality of teaching, teaching attitude, talent training performance of teachers who applied for professors and associate professors titles. After policies being moderated, the schools also strengthened the contribution made by teachers in talent training, established appraisal system of talent teaching to emphasize the morality of students, in order to instruct the education of teachers and serve the goal of school’s talent training.
