RUC ranks top in latest discipline evaluation

On January 29, China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC) released the university ranking of first tier disciplines around the country for the third time. Nine first tier disciplines of Renmin University of China rank the first. The total number of first tier disciplines ranking the first is among the top three in the country; so is that of first tier disciplines ranking the third. Moreover, the totality of first tier disciplines in the field of humanities and social science takes the first place among Chinese universities.
Compared to the second evaluation results, Renmin University of China possesses two more first tier disciplines which rank the first and three more which rank the third among universities. Nine disciplines ranking the first are Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, Law, Political Science, Sociology, Journalism and Communication, Statistics, Business Administration and Public Administration. In addition, Philosophy, Marxism Studies and Agricultural Economics and Management rank the second; Library, Information and Archive Management rank the third; Chinese History ranks the fourth; Chinese Language and Literature ranks the twelfth.
The evaluation was launched in December, 2011, with more than 4200 disciplines of 390 universities and institutions involved. According to the catalog of disciplines set for PhD and master degree released by the Ministry of Education, 95 first tier disciplines are evaluated, 28 of which are classified as humanities and social science.
The evaluation indicates that Renmin University of China,PekingUniversityandTsinghuaUniversityhave evidential advantages over social science, arts and medical science, engineering respectively. In the catalog, Renmin University of China is possessed of 20 doctorate-granting disciplines, 17 of which belong to humanities and social science. 13 of them are ranked among top three around the country.
Li Jun, director of CDGDC, said on a press conference that core competence and speciality of a university is epitomized by its disciplines. The evaluation carried on by CDGDC is aimed at enhancing discipline construction so as to improve education and degree granting quality.
Li Jun pointed out, the evaluation is conducted fairly with subjective and objective assessment combined; the assessment mode of students' quality, academic papers, achievements in scientific research are innovated. The evaluation objectively presents the superiority, speciality and development of Chinese universities.
