President Chen Yulu expressed his gratitude to the leaders and experts present for their support of RUC subject building and academic research. He also shared his opinions on the development of China and the world.
He pointed out that history taught us that China should grasp the sixth and seventh cycling term of the world economy to build its own development pattern, and lay the foundation to realizing China’s Dream. The biggest difficulty for China now is to create three miracles: to maintain high speed growth for the next four to five decades; to restructure the economy and development seize the opportunity of global financial crisis; to become a strong country that does not seek hegemony.
Achieving these three tasks needs strong theoretical support for national development. President Chen believed that holding this forum was a good experiment of RUC to push forward the coordination and innovation of philosophy and social science. With more and more friends’ understanding the expectations, this forum would become a new brand academic activity in the field of national strategic studies.
Prof. Lei Da from the School of Economics gave a presentation on behalf of the project team, Growth Stagnation, Conflict Intensification of the World’s Politics and Economy.
Prof. Lei pointed out that, the adjustment of the global political and economic structure has led to national and regional turmoil, making Asia the global geopolitical hotspot. Disputes over the sovereignty of islands in China’s coastal areas are the best illustrations. These conflicts have posed challenges to the security in China’s surroundings. Meanwhile, Sino-American relations are becoming more and more important. China’s rise and the global influence together with the Obama Administration’s Return To China Strategy complicated the situation in China’s surroundings. Since the 1990s, the changing global economy has increased the interdependence among the nations. The rise of East Asia’s economy has shifted the global pattern. Direct military confrontation is not the major way for major powers to contest interest. However, for a long time, military power competition and the strategy of military threat will remain important in the political and economic landscape. Therefore, the sophisticated situation caused by Asian geo-political competition will not change fundamentally in 2013 and will possibly escalate.
Yun Peijun believed that RUC’s interdisciplinary studies and coordinated innovation was a good study pattern. This pattern would lead the cooperation between different schools and broaden the experts’ horizon. Faced with increasing exterior pressure in politics, economics and security, we should enhance our studies and communication and make contributions to the overall grasp of diplomacy.
Prof. Zhu Chenhu believed that America will remain the super power for at least 50 years. Today’s recession is temporary, because America is the leading power in establishing the world’s political and economic order, in establishing the financial system, its innovative spirit, political factors, cultural factors and military advantage.
Prof. Ding Yifan thought that debt would hinder America’s economic growth. China is becoming increasingly important to the world economy. China’s development in the future should focus more on quality rather than speed.
Prof. Jian Qingguo discussed the relationship between a rising China whilst safeguarding its maritime rights and interests. The rising China brings a dual and paradoxical nature to its identity and interests, making it difficult to handle its foreign relations. China needs to cautiously reflect on how to safeguard its maritime interests in balance with other nations. Firstly, safeguarding maritime interests requires an objective understanding of its own interests. Secondly, there should be limits and targets. Thirdly, there should be priority and focus. Fourthly, the handing of maritime problems need to be rational
Prof. Li Xiangyang maintains that the problems faced with developed countries can have solutions. America’s returning to Asia is its most important strategy. China’s surrounding problems cannot be judged as improvement or deterioration. This is an inevitable transitional period. China will meet even greater challenges in the future and need to respond to them differently in economic and foreign diplomacy.
Prof. Du Houwen believed that inflation cannot completely off-set sovereign debt. We should remain rational and sober-minded when judging China’s position in World economy.
The audience was attracted by the speakers’ excellent speeches. Xinhua news agency, Guangming Daily, China Security News, 21st Century Business Herald, First Financial Daily, Economic Observer and other news agencies covered the forum. The forum was broadcasted live via Tencent.
