Radio Station of Renmin University of China, Now Broadcasting Radio Station of Renmin University of China, Now Broadcasting
2025.05.26

This opening slogan, alternately spoken by male and female voices, which was heard forty years ago, resounded once again on the campus of Renmin University on May 18th.

The Renmin University of China Radio Station (formerly known as the Renmin University of China Broadcasting Station) is one of the longest-standing student media outlets at Renmin University. Over the past decades, it has become a shared "spiritual home" for thousands of station members.

After learning that the university would hold its first Global Alumni Conference in May this year, four alumni who served as the station chief of the university's radio station in the 1980s reached out to the university's alumni association and joined hands with the current radio station students to jointly plan a special "reunion of voices". Several "old broadcasters" returned to the broadcasting room, picked up the microphone again, and started the familiar voice of Renmin University.

The old station master made the introduction.

A Reunion of Sound and Image Spanning Four Decades

Wang Yijie, who graduated from the Department of Agricultural Economics at Renmin University of China in 1986, started as a broadcaster and eventually became the station director of the university's radio station, where he worked for more than two years. He clearly remembers that although the radio station had only a few programs at that time, including news, cultural appreciation, and current affairs commentary, they carried special significance.

The twice-daily broadcasts always ring out punctually during lunch and dinner breaks, with the warm voice accompanying teachers and students through day after day.

After graduation, although Wang Yijie did not directly engage in broadcasting and hosting work, he has long been devoted to the field of news and publicity. Perhaps it was the experience he accumulated at the Renmin University Broadcasting Station back then that quietly planted the seeds of professionalism in him.

In the 1980s, the students who worked at the Renmin University of China radio station often shared their past experiences in the group chat of the "Renmin University of China Radio Station Friends Association" and recalled those wonderful days of campus radio together. A few former station chiefs discussed and hoped that during the first Global Alumni Conference, everyone could once again hear the familiar and affectionate voices from their alma mater's radio station.

The lights in the grey building and the echoes from the speakers became the starting point for the station members to get to know each other and also made the campus radio station, like a gentle stream, continue to this day. Looking at the current radio station, Wang Yijie is filled with joy - the program content is more diverse and rich, gathering like-minded people from all over the country, and the conditions for running the station are no longer what they used to be.

Wang Yijie wished, "I hope all the friends at the radio station can always stick to their original intention, uphold the purpose of serving teachers and students, and convey the most beautiful voices and the most wonderful melodies."

From "Plastic Mandarin" to the National Golden Microphone Award

A Love Letter to the Radio Station

Before the first Global Alumni Conference, Chen Xiaolin, an alumnus of the 1984 class of the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China, wrote and recorded a letter titled "A Letter to My Radio Friends." "When I said the number 84, I was startled myself. It turns out that my time at Renmin University was 40 years ago." As she wrote these words, the audio memories of those years came flooding back like a tide.

From being a broadcaster at Renmin University's radio station to becoming a host at Guangdong Radio and Television Station, and then winning the highest honor in China's broadcasting and hosting industry - the Golden Microphone Award for National Radio and Television Hosts, Renmin University's radio station was the starting point of Chen Xiaolin's career and holds countless youthful memories for her.

The story begins with a recruitment poster outside the cafeteria. Chen Xiaolin, a newcomer to Beijing who spoke "plastic Mandarin" with indistinguishable retroflex and palatal sounds, once failed in the selection for the radio station's announcer. The setback turned into the motivation for her to practice hard. Eventually, she impressed the then station chief Wang Yijie, who was the examiner, with her transformed voice and became the first southerner in the history of the broadcasting group.

The recording studio in the stairwell of the grey building was where Chen Xiaolin's dream began. Here, she witnessed the composed and professional demeanor of the anchors, and through each recording session, she deeply ingrained her love for broadcasting into her bones. Those late-night figures hunched over their desks polishing manuscripts, those repeated practices to correct pronunciation, all paved the way for her future stardom.

After graduation, Chen Xiaolin joined Guangdong Radio and Television Station with her dream of broadcasting and became a professional program host. All the experience she accumulated at her alma mater turned into the power to brave the wind and waves.

In 1995, she won the Gold Award of the National Radio and Television Host Golden Microphone. Now, as she is about to celebrate her 60th birthday, she remains active on the front line of hosting with her passion for the broadcasting industry. "I am grateful to Renmin University and the university's radio station for giving me a direction to love." Back to the Broadcasting Station

Those years, the "Voice of Renmin University" that belonged to us

Putting down the microphone and leaving the campus, they will always be friends of the Voice of Renmin University Radio Station; returning to the campus and picking up the microphone, they will always be the hosts of the Voice of Renmin University Radio Station.

As soon as Chen Xiaolin's letter was sent out, the students of the People's University Radio Station forwarded this heartfelt "declaration" from their senior classmate one after another.

Gai Na, a freshman at the School of Journalism in 2022, recalled her experience of being rejected by the school radio station in high school due to her accent. Driven by her passion for broadcasting, she kept practicing and eventually spoke fluent and standard Mandarin. After entering university, she smoothly became a host of the Renmin University Radio Station. Last week, she was awarded the title of "Gold Medal Storyteller" in the "2025 Capital Red Storytelling Competition".

Wang Guan, a 2022 undergraduate student from the Business School, signed up for the "Old Friends Return to Broadcasting" event as soon as he learned about it. From Chen Xiaolin's letter, he felt the power of "passing on the torch" and cherished this precious moment of witnessing the return of youth. "I'm very familiar with this live streaming room, but I was a little nervous while waiting for my senior classmates inside."

The students were looking forward to it with bated breath, while the returning schoolmates were also full of anticipation amid the tension.

Mou Lei, an alumnus of the School of Finance and Economics from the class of 2010, had just performed "Four Seas Return to the Vessel" at the first Global Alumni Conference and rushed to the live broadcast room to do the voice-over. Eleven years after graduation, he had returned to his alma mater many times, but this was the first time he had stepped into the live broadcast room again. Seeing the chairs used for rest and the desks for editing scripts before the live broadcast were exactly the same as they were back then, he couldn't help but recall those days when he got up early every day to do the voice-over. "Picking up the microphone again to broadcast the script, it feels like I'm back in those days."

The feeling of broadcasting remains the same as before, and the friendship among colleagues on the airwaves is still as sincere as ever. Although Li Qizhang, an alumnus of the Chinese Department of the class of 1981, was unable to attend the event in person, he wrote the calligraphy work "The Voice of Renmin University, Home of Colleagues on the Airwaves" overnight. Ma Le, an alumnus of the School of Agriculture and Rural Development of the class of 2003, wrote a short essay, recalling the encouragement given to him by his senior colleagues at the radio station in the past.

On the afternoon of May 18th, the returning old table tennis friends gathered together Remembering the Past. Alumni from the 2009 class, Gao XinYu, shared that he had taken a precious group photo with his partners at that time. During the lonely days of studying abroad, he would always take out this photo from his wallet and instantly feel a sense of strength. Alumni from the 2019 class, Hu Chengbo, expressed his sentiment: "The friends I met in the radio station are friends who can accompany me for a lifetime." Even though we can't see each other frequently after graduation, everyone still cares about each other in their hearts. When we meet again, there is no sense of strangeness, and the entire venue is filled with laughter and joy.

A series of memories, one by one past events

Through the radio waves, across time and space

From the gray building radio studio in the 1980s

To the modern equipment and brand-new space today

From the call sign "The Radio Station of Renmin University of China began broadcasting" at the beginning

To the opening words "Renmin University of China's Voice, Always Continues"

Expressing emotions through sound, conveying meaning through music

The sound waves continue, the sentiment remains unchanged

This is the common memory of the radio station staff -

Time flies, but the voices in the radio waves remain forever.

As years pass, the youth in our memories lasts forever.

The frequency of Renmin University is always clear.

This is the voice of Renmin University.

You are always welcome to come back home.
