“Dream Start at RUC”– RUC 2014 new students artistic performance is held
2014.10.06
On the night of September 28
th, “Dream Start at RUC” new student artistic performance was held at RUC’s Mingde Hall. Executive Vice Chairman Zhang Jianming and more than 1000 students watched the performance.
Both new and returning students were excited by this year’s original performances. At the beginning of the evening, first year students from each college were projected on the big screen discussing their initial impressions of RUC, what they intended to study, and the accomplishments they dream of achieving. Throughout the show, a story involving six “lost sculptures” taking different shapes was told in order to reveal the six important qualities that each new student should possess—appreciation, responsibility, knowledge, cooperation, personality, and patriotism.
A performance choreographed by new students from each college called “Starlight” kicked off the first chapter of the story. This was then followed by a series of other performances including instrumental pieces and diverse dancing styles to remind first-year students to cherish these moments but keep responsibility close to heart. Other song and dance numbers covered the remaining qualities, ending with the “Red Flag” song to inspire patriotism and express the blessing of the 65-year continued span of the People’s Republic of China.
At the end of the night, the audience all found fluorescent paper planes under their seats that doubled as graduation postcards. The fluorescent paper airplane symbolizes the visions and dreams of the first-year students, while the postcard is meant to inspire the relentless pursuit of growth, success, and positive aspirations. The students and teachers took the paper airplanes and in a symbolic “spread your wings and fly” moment, threw them towards the stage, as the planes carried the hopes and dreams of the students with them.
The night ended with a lively dance performance of the song, “I Believe.” Afterwards, faculty members and school leaders met the cast and crew of the production on stage to shake hands and pose for pictures.
Events such as this occur on campus in order to display the family-like community that is so strong at RUC. This occasion in particular shows the many colorful and diverse features the university has to offer and helps to inspire the new students with enthusiasm for learning and an excitement to become a part of this great institution.
