Zimbabwe has Its First Chinese-Shona Dictionary: The University of Zimbabwe Confucius Institute Publishes First Chinese-Shona/Shona-Chinese Dictionary
2015.08.08
This past July, the University of Zimbabwe Confucius Institute published the first Chinese-Shona/Shona-Chinese Dictionary, a collaborative project between Zimbabwe’s Confucius Institute and the Tianjin Confucius Institute. The dictionary is Zimbabwe's first Chinese - Shona bilingual dictionary. While it is one of Zimbabwe’s official languages, Shona is not only spoken within Zimbabwe’s borders, but is also widespread in other African countries, including Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, and Botswana. With the publication of the dictionary, courses in Chinese language and Chinese linguistics are being introduced into the University of Zimbabwe’s curriculum as accredited courses facilitating the emergence of Zimbabwean scholars of China and the Chinese language. The dictionary contains 1,056 Chinese entries and 1,695 entries in Shona. It includes Chinese vocabulary items from the HSK level 1 to HSK level 4 examinations and other vocabulary items necessary for daily conversation. The Shona vocabulary is taken from a related corpus, other bilingual dictionaries, and Shona textbooks. With increasing exchanges between China and Zimbabwe, learning Chinese has become crucial in order to better understand China, particularly in the fields of trade, science, technology, culture, and education. Since the founding of the University of Zimbabwe in 2007, students’ foreign language interests have shifted from French and Portuguese to Chinese. The dictionary is sure to become an indispensable resource for Shona native speakers learning Chinese. 津巴布韦首部汉语-修纳语双语词典
