RUC Professor GU Baocheng Elected Vice President of the Asian Population Association

The Asian Population Association has elected Renmin University Professor GU Baochang of RUC’s School of Sociology and Population Studies as Vice President of the association’s 2016-18 council. Seventeen candidates stood for the election while nine were elected to the council.

The Asian Population Association has driven the field of Asian population studies since its founding in 2007. It promotes vital research on population issues and research exchanges within Asia, particularly developing regions, investigating the interconnections between demographic trends and economic development. It has been a prime concern to involve more Chinese researchers and Chinese research institutes in this work.
As one of its founding members, Professor GU Baochang has actively contributed to the growth of the Association from its inception.

GU obtained his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin and currently advises sociology PhD students at RUC. China’s leading expert in population studies focusing on issues such as birth control policy, reproductive health, gender imbalance, and the roles of women in society, Professor GU has published over 60 articles in prominent international journals and is the author of more than ten books.
GU also serves as a visiting professor of the National Social Science Foundation and as council member of the Chinese Society of Population Studies. He has won a number of prestigious awards and research grants and has served on international committees, including the World Health Organization expert group on reproductive health (2001-2010), the editorial board of the journal
International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, and the organizing committees for various conferences. In 1988 he became the first Chinese expert employed as a long-term consultant for the United Nations Population Fund. Both as a scholar and in his international advisory capacities, Professor GU Baochang has played an important role in bringing Chinese population studies to Asia and the world at large.
