On February 2
nd, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Beijing’s National Grand Theater jointly hosted the young musicians concert as part of the 2016 “Beijing Year Opening Music Gala” held at the National Grand Theater. Renmin University’s student accordion group was invited as the only non-music major group to perform at the evening concert for an audience of several hundred spectators.
The “Beijing Year Opening Music Gala” marks the beginning of the city’s arts and music events calendar and is a notable cultural highlight annually held on the eve of the Chinese Spring Festival. This year’s gala was held from February 1
st to 3
rd. Student groups performing at the young musicians concert on the second evening came from different institutions around Beijing, including the Central Conservatory of Music and the China Conservatory, each offering a brilliant performance in turn, a Spring Festival “musical feast” for the people. RUC’s accordion players offered two classic pieces, the Radetzky March and the Golden Medley. The Radetzky March is a famous orchestral march by Johann Strauss Sr., which is traditionally played as the last piece at New Year’s concerts in Vienna; here it was played in a version adapted for the accordion. The Golden Medley, a compilation of several well-known pieces, including Carnival of Venice, Heaven and Hell, Tiger Hill, and others, featured a wide variety in style and content and was well liked by the audience. Overall, RUC’s performance was met with wide appreciation.
Renmin University’s student accordion group has proven successful in the recent past, last year winning gold in a nationwide accordion competition.
