The Chinese Ministry of Education has recently announced the recipients of the 2015 “Changjiang Scholar” Awards. The award is China’s top academic distinction and recognizes scholars who have made outstanding contributions to research in their respective fields. For 2015, five RUC professors – HUANG Xingtao, JIN Canrong, ZHANG Shunming, LIANG Tao, and YAN Jinming – were appointed “Changjiang Professors”; six younger RUC scholars – ZHU Guanming, QIU Huanguang, YANG Dong, LI Yong, WANG Xiaofang, and JI Wei – were chosen for the “Changjiang Young Scholars Program.” The program selected 418 Changjiang Scholars from different categories, including 154 appointed professors, 52 lecturing professors, and 212 young scholars. Among these, 120 scholars are selected in the humanities and social sciences disciplines, including 45 appointed professors, 14 lecturing professors, and 61 young scholars. For these disciplines, Peking University and Renmin University tied for first place nationwide in the number of 2015 Changjiang Scholars. To date, 57 RUC scholars have been selected for the Changjiang Program, including 38 appointed professors, 13 lecturing professors, and six young scholars. The Changjiang Scholar Award Program was initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Hong Kong-based Li Jiacheng Foundation in 1998 to consolidate resources for high-end talent development. In 2011, the Ministry of education established the new Changjiang Scholar Award Program with the goal of training, promoting, and attracting gifted and internationally competitive academic elites, including up-and-coming researchers.
