Chairwoman JIN Nuo Leads Group to Ireland, Attends 10 Year Anniversary of the Confucius Institute of University College Dublin

Between the 23rd and the 26th of September, Chairwoman of the Renmin University Council JIN Nuo lead a group of representatives of Renmin University to Ireland to pay a visit to University College Dublin (UCD) and their Confucius Institute. After an official meeting between Chairwoman JIN and President of University College Dublin Professor Andrew Deeks, they attended a concert held in honour of the 10th Anniversary of the Confucius Institute at UCD, performed by an ensemble from the Renmin University Chamber Orchestra and the UCD Symphony Orchestra. After the performance various activities were held in commemoration of the occasion including a talk with the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, YUE Xiaoyong. On the 24th of September, Chairwoman JIN and the group arrived at UCD to have a meeting with Professor Deeks. During the meeting Chairwoman JIN conveyed that Renmin University of China has always seen as significant the need for collaboration with UCD, highlighting the fact that it has only been on account of the concerted efforts of both sides that for ten years the Confucius Institute at UCD has been so successful. This success has seen great efforts in promoting Chinese culture in Ireland and encouraging cultural interchange between China and Ireland, and at the same time has created a fine platform for academic collaboration between the two institutions and by extension, the two countries. Both sides have gone further in their exchanges between students and scholars, building a solid foundation for significant and profound academic collaboration. At the same time, Chairwoman JIN invited Professor Deeks to attend the official celebration of the 80th anniversary of Renmin University’s founding, to be held in October next year. %e9%83%bd%e6%9f%8f%e6%9e%97%e5%a4%a7%e5%ad%a6%e6%a0%a1%e9%95%bf%e8%b5%a0%e7%a4%bc Accompanied by Professor Deeks of UCD, the local Director of the Confucius Institute WANG Liming, and the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute CAI Yongqiang, Chairwoman JIN went on a tour of the UCD campus to take a tour of the construction of the new building for the UCD Confucius Institute, and was briefed on the progress of the development. Chairwoman JIN also visited an exhibition of the CI’s achievements from the last ten years. %e5%8f%82%e8%a7%82%e5%ad%94%e5%ad%90%e5%ad%a6%e9%99%a2%e5%8d%81%e5%91%a8%e5%b9%b4%e6%88%90%e5%b0%b1%e5%b1%954 On the evening of the 24th, a concert was given to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the UCD Confucius Institute, Chairwoman JIN was present at the event and gave a speech. Ambassador YUE and Professor Deeks were joined by over 400 guests in attending this event. Chairwoman JIN, acting on behalf of Renmin University, first congratulated University College Dublin on the 10th anniversary of its Confucius Institute. During her speech she indicated that UCD Confucius Institute was the first overseas Confucius Institute with which Renmin University had a collaborative agreement. In these ten years, through the hard work of both sides, the quality of education delivered by the Confucius Institute has continued to increase, with its operative ability and efficiency improving every day, strengthening its cohesion and appeal. In 2014, UCD Confucius Institute was chosen as the first “Global Exemplar Confucius Institute” from a Renmin University and overseas CI collaborative agreement; this is because it has greatly facilitated the interchange between people from China and Ireland and has made an important contribution for establishing connections between the hearts and minds of people from our two nations. Chairwoman JIN then expressed gratitude on behalf of Renmin University to all of the people involved in the construction and development of the CI for their hard work and support. %e4%b9%a6%e8%ae%b0%e8%87%b4%e8%be%9e4 Following, an ensemble made up of performers from Renmin University Chamber Orchestra and University College Dublin Symphony Orchestra held a concert. Professors ZHOU Fang, ZHANG Fang, CHENG Yawei, YANG Yi, HAO Dandan and over ten students of the School of Arts put on a performance of many Chinese classic compositions. image005 On the 25th of September, Chairwoman JIN went to the Chinese Embassy in Ireland, so as to talk about Sino-Irish exchange and collaboration, especially with regards strengthening the relationship between Renmin University of China and Ireland’s top academic institutions, and promoting collaboration in the fields of humanities, as well as exchanging ideas on how to improve UCD’s Confucius Institute. %e4%ba%ba%e5%a4%a7%e4%bb%a3%e8%a1%a8%e5%9b%a2%e5%8f%82%e8%ae%bf%e4%bd%bf%e9%a6%86%e5%90%88%e5%bd%b1 Also invited to celebrate at the events of the 10th anniversary of UCD’s Confucius Institute was Associate Dean of Renmin University’s Department of International Studies, JIN Canrong. During the visit he also gave a lecture titled “Sino-US relations – Opportunities and Challenges.” University College Dublin’s Confucius Institute was established in September of 2006, being Renmin University’s first jointly sponsored Confucius Institute with an overseas collaborative partner. Since the founding of UCD’s Confucius Institute, it has been involved in many important works such as: promoting Chinese language and cultural studies in Ireland; training Chinese teachers; conducting the HSK; running projects to facilitate university and secondary school students to travel to China to attend “China Bridge Camps” during their summer and winter break; taking tours of China for educators; and many other projects designed to facilitate cultural exchange. With the promotion of UCD’s Confucius Institute, both institutions have made substantial achievements in the fields of academic cooperation, student exchange, and the development of future leaders. With regards developing future leaders, UCD’s finance department has already started undergraduate and Master’s programs in “Finance and Chinese Studies” and “Law and Chinese Studies.” It is planned that, on this foundation, further programs will be developed such as “Economics and Chinese Studies,”” Politics and Chinese Studies,” and “History and Chinese Studies” majors, developing potential candidates for Hanban’s “Confucian New Sinology” PhD Fellowship Program, as a means of cultivating professionals with a knowledge of Chinese language and culture so they have a deep affinity with both cultures. With regards student exchange, since 2009, there have been over 70 outstanding students from UCD that have received scholarships to attend the CI Headquarters Summer Camp, attending classes at Renmin University during the summer break. From 2010, RUC has received over 80 exchange students from UCD. At present, there are over 10 students from UCD studying Chinese Language at Renmin University. Dean of the Philosophy Department Professor YAO Xinzhong, Director of the International Office, ZHANG Xiaojing, Deputy Director LÜ Jie, and Dr ZHANG Jing from the Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture were part of the visiting group.
