At noon on the 27^th of October, Vice President YI Zhihong of RUC met with Chair of the European Society for Translation Studies, Arnt Jakobsen, who was leading a delegation of translators from Europe on a translation study tour. During their meeting, Vice President YI inquired as to the current state and development of translation studies in Europe, and reflected on the history of collaboration between RUC and Professor Jakobsen’s home institution, Copenhagen Business School. This history, they agreed, had brought about many academic achievements, and fostered an improved relationship between Europe and China. Also in attendance at the meeting were the Associate Deans of the RUC School of Foreign Languages WANG Jianping, JIA Guolian and DIAO Keli, as well as some of their Master’s students (MTI). On the morning of the 24^th of October Professor Jakobsen’s delegation went to attend the opening ceremony of a symposium jointly hosted by the RUC’s School of Foreign Languages’ Centre for Master’s Studies and Copenhagen Business School’s Centre for Translation and Translation Technology Innovation and Research. It was titled “2016 International Symposium for Research on the Translation Process (TPR),” with seminars and lectures being held throughout the week. It was attended by over 70 representatives of around 40 institutions from all over China. Associate Dean WANG Jianping gave the welcoming address to all of the symposium attendees, with a special mention of those guests from abroad. During his oration he noted that translation studies was an important field of study in the world of today, crucial in comprehending the process of globalisation as well as for fostering intercultural communication and understanding. He further stated that RUC had a long history of academic achievements in the field of translation studies, and that he hoped that this symposium would spur on the further development of this field at the university. Michael Carl acted as representative on behalf of the overseas visitors to the symposium, giving his sincere thanks for being invited to attend the seminar. He noted the significance of the fact that it was the first time that this seminar was held in China, and hoped that it would play a pivotal role in the development of translation research in China. The symposium organisers invited 5 eminent scholars in the field of TPR to attend this symposium: Chair of the European Society of Translation Studies Arnt Lykke Jakobsen, Director of the Centre for Translation and Translation Technology Innovation and Research at Copenhagen Business School Michael Carl, and researchers from Antwerp University in Belgium Luuk Van Waes and Mariëlle Leijten, and Moritz Schaeffer from Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany. These distinguished guests gave talks pertinent to their fields of research, imparting their many years of experience and inspiring debate and discussion among those in attendance.
