RUC Holds Symposium on the Cultural Attire of Southwestern Ethnic Groups
2016.12.02
On the 30th of November, jointly held by the RUC School of Arts and the University Museum, the symposium “Research on the Cultural Attire of South Western Ethnic Groups from a Multidisciplinary Perspective” was convened, with guests from leading academic institutions from around the country in attendance. The opening speech was given by the Dean DING Fang of the School of Arts, and Deputy Curator of the University Museum LI Hui was there to explain the significance of many of the cultural artefacts on display, as well as plans for future research. The ceremony was presided over by assistant professor ZHENG Xiaohong of the School of Arts. 3 Academics and specialists participating in the symposium engaged with the topic of the cultural attire of southwestern ethnic groups from many different academic approaches, such as anthropology, psychology, cultural studies, ethnology, folklore studies, archaeology, museology, linguistics, and design, showcasing the fruits of their research, demonstrating a unique interdisciplinary approach to research. The content of the symposium went above the ordinary by investigating many aspects of the cultural attire of many of China’s ethnic minorities such as the Miao, Tong, Zhuang, and Tibetan, approaching them from the angles of design, colour, and craftsmanship, uncovering many new interpretations of the cultural significance of the attire of southwestern ethnic groups. The symposium also made innovations into the methodologies of researching the cultural attire of southwestern ethnic minorities. 2 This year in May, the Hong Kong Forex Education Foundation donated over 1200 Miao ‘Beishan’ (a kind of cultural adornment worn on the back) to the RUC University Museum, featuring an entire array of various ‘beishan’ from Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi and Hunan. Other artefacts came from such ethnic groups as the Miao, Tong, Zhuang, Shui, and the Buyi, and the artefacts were from the Qing dynasty to the present day, spanning over 200 years. This donation not only has great value for the museum displays, but also has value for the School of Arts who can study these cultural artefacts from many different perspectives. 1
