2016.12.06
On the afternoon of the 30th of November RUC held its inaugural award ceremony for the “Undergraduate Student Outgoing Exchange Scholarship” including a symposium for the outgoing exchange students at the Yifu Conference Centre. The Director of the Dean’s Office LONG Yonghong, deputy Director XUAN Tianying and others were present at the ceremony. 404a1373 Presiding over the ceremony and the symposium was deputy Director XUAN, who began by briefing the audience on the background of the scholarship including the requirements for selection. In 2016, RUC established the “Undergraduate Student Outgoing Exchange Scholarship” with the help of generous donations from Rongxin (Fujian Investment Group Ltd.) and Xin Pingdeng Foundation. The aim of the scholarship is to foster the development of talented undergraduate students so that these talented individuals can receive international experience, and to facilitate the capable completion of their overseas courses. Director LONG then read out the names of the award recipients, and each recipient and their supervising teacher received a certificate commemorating the award. 404a1397 Two of the recipients then gave a speech, one being CHEN Yuyan from the RUC School of International Studies who will be attending Korea University, and the other being ZHU Zipei from the School of Economics who will be attending Stockholm University in Sweden. In their speeches they highlighted the value of the opportunities presented by the scholarship, providing an invaluable means for student development. During their exchange programme, they were able to experience different education styles and gained much new knowledge, such as being able to improve their foreign language skills and their capacity to live independently. At the same time, the opportunity to interact with students from around the world expanded their worldview, and they have now made friends from all over the globe, expanding their capacity for intercultural exchange, understanding, and inclusivity. 404a1408 (CHEN Yuyan, of the School of International Studies, gives a speech) 404a1416 (ZHU Zipei, of the School of Economics, gives a speech) Director LONG then took to the podium, highlighting the point that the University realises the great importance of encouraging students to develop their potential abroad, and has made this one of the priorities for the University’s student development strategy, while striving to raise the international profile of the University. In a globalised world, Chinese national development requires talented people who can bring an international perspective to the table, in this way the University’s focus on developing talented students has implications for national development. Students achieve much from an international experience, such as being exposed to some of the world’s leading teaching methods, different academic concepts, and makes them better overall students. And from the student’s perspective, participating in this exchange program enables them to travel abroad, enduring many difficulties along the way, and in this not only learning new knowledge, but also becoming better and more capable people, with a better understanding of other languages, cultures and lifestyles. He concluded by noting that students can then bring this learning with them and impart it among students and staff, contributing to the development of the university, and indeed even the nation. 404a1435 During the symposium there was a presentation from a student representative of each of the Schools, recounting the possibilities of achievements, difficulties, challenges and cross-cultural experiences from overseas exchange, giving their opinions and suggestions to the students. All of the advice given to the students was positively received, and inspired many responses on behalf of the students, who in turn gave some suggestions on how to improve scholarship opportunities for the students, and suggestions on how to improve policies and services to enable students to better complete their studies. 404a1449 During the 2015-2016 academic year, there were 731 RUC undergraduate students that participated in overseas exchange programmes. Undergoing a rigorous process of recommendation, appraisal and selection in accordance with the stipulations of the RUC’s policy document on candidate selection for the “Undergraduate Student Outgoing Exchange Scholarship,” 94 students were selected to receive the scholarship in its inaugural year.
