Vice President HONG Dayong Invited to Travel to UK to Attend “Global China Dialogue”
2016.12.13
Between the 2nd to the 5th of December, Vice President HONG travelled to the UK on invitation to attend the third session of the “Global China Dialogue” series of activities jointly held at the British Academy and King’s College London. On the 2nd, “The 3rd Global China Dialogue (GCD III) – Sustainability and Global Governance for Climate Change” was held at the British Academy. Vice President HONG and renowned British Sociologist and former Director of London School of Economics Anthony Giddens gave lectures on the topics of “Facing Climate Change: China’s Efforts and their Social Significance” and “The Challenge of Climate Change in the Present Global Political Situation” respectively. That evening, Minister of State at the Department for International Development Baron Bates and his wife met with Vice President HONG and other representatives at the UK House of Parliament. %e6%9c%aa%e6%a0%87%e9%a2%98-1 During his talk Vice President HONG stated that anthropogenic climate change is widely accepted as scientific fact by the majority of scientists around the world. However, the recognition of this issue is not equilaterally held by groups from different regions, nations, and cultures. The Chinese government has officially recognised climate change as a scientific fact, having already taken positive steps to work toward mitigation of and adaptation to its effects, strengthening measures to deal with climate change, formulating and implementing binding policies, and so far making progress in some areas. This is evident especially in relation to the Chinese government’s commitment to becoming an “ecological civilisation,” which seeks to incorporate environmental health into the development strategy, with the goal being a comprehensive and profound transformation of society. There are many challenges China faces when dealing with climate change because the acceptance of climate change is not equally held, and there are many problems such as uneven development and dissimilar abilities internationally and internally, as well as issues with global cooperation and coordinated planning. The hard work with which the Chinese government are dealing with climate change, has piqued the interest of sociologists, especially in face of the environmental restrictions of China’s transformative modernisation, and also with regards the complexity of the social planning and implementation of climate change policy, but which will doubtless make a contribution to improving design and efficacy of climate change policy. On the 3rd of December, Vice President HONG attended the “Chinese Social Science Data Bank Research Workshop” activity organised by the hosts of the “Global China Dialogue.” On the 4th, Vice President HONG paid a visit to Marx’s grave, and met with the President of the British RUC Alumni Association XIAO Yexiang as well as a group of alumni to brief them on the present developments at the university as well as the preparations for the 80th anniversary celebration, taking note of the advice for future developments of the university offered by some of the alumni. On the 5th of December, Vice President HONG went to visit Cambridge University’s King’s College, meeting with renowned anthropologist professor Alan Macfarlane, giving him a rundown on the present developments of anthropology at RUC, and exploring options for developing collaboration in the future. image003
