Vice President YI Zhihong attends Global Confucius Institute Conference, Represents China’s Leading Academic Institutions

th of December, the 11
th Global Confucius Institute Conference was held in Kunming, Yunnan province. Chair of the Confucius Institute (CI) Council and Vice Premier of the State Council Madame LIU Yandong attended as keynote speaker, and presented awards for individuals and organisations of the global CI network. Deputy Chair of the CI Council and Minister for Education CHEN Baosheng presided over the conference. RUC Vice President YI Zhihong attended and gave a presentation on behalf of the universities of China, also representing the Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture in introducing the “Confucius China Studies Program.” Rector Andrew Deeks of University College Dublin, one of RUC CI’s partner Institutes, received the “Global Confucius Institute Individual Excellence Award.”

During Vice Premier LIU’s speech she noted that in modern times people around the world desire a new style of international relations focussed on mutual benefits, led by the idea of a common destiny. In this way, the CI wants strive for innovation, cooperation, inclusivity, and sharing, to strengthen reforms and innovation in all aspects of pedagogy, and to improve the overall quality of schooling. She continued, stressing the importance of facilitating enthusiastic collaboration of Chinese and international academic institutions, so that we can learn from each other and improve our teaching methods. And in order to spur the localisation of the CI it is important to maintain open-door schooling, to promote the interaction between Chinese and local cultures. She concluded by stating that the successful running of the CI is an important part of the “belt and road” initiative, with the potential to develop cooperative mechanisms for regional and national development, which promotes intercultural experiences, and works hard to benefit people of all nations, so as to contribute to the promotion of the development of a flourishing and multicultural civilisation.
Vice Premier LIU then present the awards for “Model Confucius Institute,” “Confucius Institute (Classroom) of the Year,” “Confucius Institute Individual Performance,” and “Outstanding Chinese Partner” on behalf of CI Headquarters. Rector Andrew Deeks of University College Dublin received the “Global Confucius Institute Individual Performance” award.

th, Vice President YI attended the “11
th Confucius Institute Conference,” and was the only representative of China’s academic institutions to speak at the conference, where she presented a talk on the topic “Confucius Institute Development: Five Years into the Future.”

Dr Cathy ZHANG from the RUC’s Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture shares her thoughts on the past achievements and future prospects of RUC’s “Confucius China Studies Program” at the Director’s Forum held on the 10
th of December.

RUC held a reception for the people involved in developing RUC’s partner CIs during 2016 during the conference in Kunming. Over thirty Directors from RUC’s overseas partner Confucius Institutes attended the reception, where they got together for an informal discussion on the recent developments at their Institutes. Vice President YI Zhihong was present to greet the guests and expressed thanks for their hard work and support in developing the CI at their respective institutions, also giving a summary on the recent developments of the CI at RUC.

The Global CI Conference is a distinguished event held annually by CI Headquarters, where it has been honoured as the “Davos” of education. To the present day, there are already 140 nations that have established 511 Confucius Institutes home to 1073 Confucius Classrooms. In 2016, there are over 2.1 million students taking classes at CIs or Confucius Classrooms, and over 46,000 teachers. Today, CI has become one of the most widespread global language and cultural institutes.
The Global CI Conference was attended by around 2400 people, including Directors and representatives from the CIs of 140 countries, staff from embassies and Consulates as well as representatives of language and cultural promotion institutes of other nations.
Ten years have passed since 2006 when RUC established its first overseas partner Confucius Institute. This year, RUC CI unveils its 13
th institute, located at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. At present, RUC has 13 CIs and 20 Confucius Classrooms in 11 countries throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. RUC has over 200 student volunteers and 80 teachers working at overseas CIs. Of RUC’s partner Institutions, 18 have received “Model Confucius Institute,” “Confucius Institute Individual Achievement” and “Outstanding Chinese Partner” awards.
