2020.12.01
On November 19th, an online conference “Chinese Literature in Central and Eastern Europe: The Translatable and Untranslatable” was held by the School of Liberal Arts. Scholars and translators from the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Chinese Studies and Cultural Exchange, Minzu University of China, University of Warsaw, SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Cafoscari University of Venice and University of Ljubljana attended the conference. YAN Lianke, LIANG Hong and ZHANG Yueran joined the conference as representatives of Chinese writers. The conference consisted of three sections. In the first section, translators domestic and abroad talked about the challenges of translation and publication of Chinese literatures. In the second section, Chinese writer representatives analyzed the difficulties of the translations of their works, and they hoped that translators could pay more attention to the works of contemporary Chinese writers, allowing valuable works to be exposed to a wider range of readers. In the last section, the translators and writers joined a discussion on how to face the challenges in the translation works. In his concluding remarks, Prof. YANG Qingxiang, Vice Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, said that translation of both ancient and contemporary modern literatures had contributed not only the spread of Chinese culture, but also to the diversity of world culture. This joint meeting between authors and translators sparked cooperation and ideas. It is hoped that discussion of this conference will effectively promote the translation of Chinese literature, as well as related academic exchanges between China and central and eastern Europe.
