"Healthy China & High-Quality Population Development Forum" Held, RUC School of Population and Health Established
On June 20, RUC held a forum on the theme of "Building a Healthy China & High-Quality Population Development" and the inaugural meeting of the School of Population and Health.
Vice Minister of Civil Affairs Zhang Chunsheng, Deputy Director of the National Health Commission Yu Xuejun, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Chinese Democratic League Liu Jiaqiang, and other distinguished guests attended. Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Wang Chen delivered a video address; Chair of the University Council Zhang Donggang, President Lin Shangli, former Vice President and Dean of the School of Population and Health Du Peng, President of the China Population Association and National First-class Professor Zhai Zhenwu, among others, attended. RUC Vice President Wang Yi presided over the event.
The newly established School of Population and Health integrates RUC's strengths in demography, population, resources and environmental economics, gerontology, and social medicine and public health management. It aims to promote knowledge innovation and scientific exploration in population and health, cultivate interdisciplinary talents in this field, and serve the Healthy China and high-quality population development strategies. The school aspires to become a high-level teaching and research platform in population and health both domestically and internationally, injecting strong momentum into supporting Chinese-style modernization with high-quality population development and enhancing people's health and well-being. Currently, the School of Population and Health consists of the Department of Demography, Gerontology, and Public Health.
Zhang Donggang emphasized that population and health are crucial to people's well-being, national development, and progress, and are closely related to the realization of Chinese-style modernization. The establishment of the School of Population and Health reflects the RUC's commitment to national strategic needs, optimizing disciplines, and playing a leading role in building a Healthy China and promoting high-quality population development.
Lin Shangli announced the decision to establish the School of Population and Health.
Zhang Chunsheng, Yu Xuejun, Liu Jiaqiang, Yang Yunyan, Cai Fang, Peng Xizhe, Zhang Donggang, Lin Shangli, Du Peng, and Zhai Zhenwu jointly unveiled the plaque for the School of Population and Health at RUC.
On behalf of the National Health Commission, Yu Xuejun congratulated the establishment of the School of Population and Health. He stated that the National Health Commission looks forward to deepening strategic cooperation with RUC, especially the School of Population and Health, to address weaknesses, leverage strengths, and jointly promote theoretical innovation in population and health disciplines. This will help effectively address population aging and contribute to building a Healthy China.
Yang Yunyan stated that the establishment of the School of Population and Health is a significant milestone in the development of RUC and a major event in the field of population and health in China. Population and health is an emerging frontier discipline closely linked to public policy. Yang expressed hope that the School of Population and Health will bring together top experts and scholars, build a first-class academic platform, conduct cutting-edge scientific research, and cultivate more talents with both professional competence and practical skills. This will help construct an independent Chinese knowledge system and contribute to the nation's prosperity and the well-being of its people.
Wang Chen stated in his video speech that population and health issues are significant challenges in the new era. The establishment of the School of Population and Health at RUC is an important measure to focus on the strategic needs of the country and support Chinese-style modernization with high-quality population development.
After the opening ceremony, Yang Yunyan, Peng Xizhe, and Ji Xunming, Vice President of Capital Medical University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered keynote speeches on the themes of "Chinese-style Modernization and the Changes and Invariance of the Hu Huanyong Line," "Revisiting the Relationship between Population and Socioeconomic Development," and "Reflections and Actions on Healthy Aging in Beijing," respectively. Du Peng presided over the session.
In the afternoon, the sub-forum on "Construction of China's Autonomous Knowledge System in Population Studies and the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Population Research Institute of RUC" was held concurrently with the sub-forum on "Construction of China's Autonomous Knowledge System in Health." Zhai Zhenwu and Du Peng respectively chaired these sessions.
Leaders from domestic sister universities and research institutions, as well as leaders and representatives from relevant departments, colleges, and institutes of RUC attended the event.
