Twenty Years of RUC MUN: Youth Pioneering Global Governance

On May 9, the Renmin University of China Model United Nations Association (RUC MUN) 20th Anniversary Innovation and Development Forum, along with the launch ceremony of the Global Governance Youth Pioneer Initiative, was held at the Yifu Auditorium, bringing together distinguished guests to celebrate this milestone.

Two Decades of “Global Dialogue”

Founded in 2005 by the Yishaochi Lake, RUC MUN began with 82 students debating “Nuclear Warhead and Material Control.” Over the past 20 years, it has grown into a nationally renowned academic MUN association. Congratulatory messages poured in from figures such as Wang Ling, an official from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and Liu Kai, Deputy Director of the International Liaison Department of the Communist Youth League Central Committee, praising RUC MUN for opening a window to the world for youth. RUC President Lin Shangli encouraged students to become practitioners of “global vision, humanistic spirit, and Chinese wisdom.”

Youth Voices Join the Tide of Global Governance

At the 20th RUC MUN Conference, nearly 400 delegates from over 120 universities and high schools across China engaged in discussions on pressing international issues. The FAO simulation focused on “Food Security in Conflict Zones,” while the International Press Corps documented the proceedings. Mei Wenxuan, a member of the RUC MUN Executive Board, stated, “We will uphold the spirit of ‘academic excellence’ and contribute wisdom to building a community with a shared future for mankind.”

From “Simulation” to “practice”

RUC MUN is not just an academic platform but also a cradle for youth development. Alumni like Wu Di, a lecturer at the School of International Studies, Long Tianmin, an international communication professional, and Han Chong, a future diplomat, all began their journeys here, integrating “the fate of others” into their careers. Zhang Xiaojing, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of International Studies, emphasized that MUN is a “stage for nurturing global governance talents,” where youth engage with international rules and multilateral diplomacy.

Youth Responsibility Shapes the Future

Marking its 20th anniversary, RUC MUN collaborated with 22 universities to release the Global Governance Youth Pioneer Initiative, calling on young people to become participants, contributors, and leaders in global governance. Yang Bingqi, another Executive Board member, remarked, “Critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, and Chinese wisdom are our toolkit for engaging with the world.”

From “academic simulation” to “practical responsibility,” RUC MUN’s two decades have been a convergence of youth and ambition. Moving forward, RUC MUN will continue to empower young people, harnessing their energy to build a global dream.
