RUC holds the “Round Table Conference on Asia-Pacific Food Safety Governance”

“Round Table Conference on Asia-Pacific Food Safety Governance” was held in RUC on Dec, 18th. It was cosponsored by Food Safety Governance Collaborative Innovation Centre, NUDP and the Law School of RUC, aiming to enhance the international cooperation, share the experience and develop a cooperative mechanism on food safety governance in Asia-Pacific region. hc The guests of the Round Table Conference included the President of RUC Prof. Chen Yulu, Deputy Country Director of UNDP Patrick Haverman, representative of the UNEP to China Mr. Zhang Shigang and representatives from other organizations. Scholars from Harvard University, University of Sydney, Seoul National University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University and many other universities and institutions also attended the conference, so did many media. The opening ceremony was moderated by the Associate Dean of the Law School of RUC, also the Director of the Management Committee of Food Safety Governance Collaborative Innovation Centre, Mr. Hu Jinguang. President of RUC Prof. Chen Yulu addressed the opening, in which he said food safety has become a significant international issue, and that food safety is an important part of developing the public security system and social governance system. Food safety should and can be the breakthrough of the reform. After that, the Director of Law Department in the Food and Drug Administration Xu Jing, Deputy Country Director of UNDP Patrick Haverman and the Dean of the Law School of RUC, also the Deputy Director of Food Safety Governance Collaborative Innovation Centre Han Dayuan gave speeches. The presentation session was moderated by the representative of the UNEP to China Mr. Zhang Shigang. Academician Chen Junshi from Chinese Academy of Engineering gave a report named “The Reform and New Challenges of China’s Food Safety Governance System”. Chen pointed out that it needs the participation of the whole society to solve the food safety problem. Prof. David Y. W. LEE from the Medical School of Harvard University gave the report “The Regulation on GMF in the US”. The US government supervises genetically modified food in legislation, administration and technology levels, which can be a reference for China.  Vice President of RUC and the Director of Food Safety Governance Collaborative Innovation Centre Prof. Wang Liming gave the speech of “Law in the Food Safety Governance”, in which he pointed out that it is a great change in concepts from food hygiene to food safety. The law has to play a role in food safety governance in order to achieve the goal. The discussion of this conference was divided into four sessions. Topics included the experience in food safety governance in Asia-Pacific Region and the regional cooperation and assistance in food safety governance. In the closing ceremony, Dean Han Dayuan made a summary. He said it is a basic human right to enjoy safe food. The human life is priceless and we have to think and talk about food safety from the perspective of protecting human rights, instead of over-emphasizing economic development. Food safety needs comprehensive treatment and interdisciplinary communication. Finally food safety will become a culture. This conference established a regional cooperative platform and a dialogue mechanism for food safety governance in Asia-Pacific. It will play a positive role in improving food safety in the region. “The Declaration of Asia-Pacific Food Safety” was also released in the conference.
