Seminar on“Role of Humanities and Social Sciences in Food Safety Administration” held

th, Coordination and Innovation Center on Food Safety Administration held a seminar on “Role of Humanities and Social Sciences in Food Safety Administration” at Law School of Tsinghua University. A group of 12 RUC scholars from Law School, School of International Relations, School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development and School of Environment and Natural Resources, headed by Prof Hu Jinguang, Vice Dean of Law School, attended the seminar. About 30 experts and scholars from Tsinghua University were in attendance. They are fromLaw School, School of Environment, and Research Center for Public Healthat Tsinghua University.The seminar was moderated by Prof Shen Weixing, Vice Dean of Law School of Tsinghua University.

At the seminar, Prof Shen Weixing briefly introduced the Coordination and Innovation Center on Food Safety Administration, and Prof Wang Zhenmin, Dean of Law School of Tsinghua University, extended warm welcome to all guests, and said that Law School of Tsinghua University would continue to play an active part in performing the tasks for the center. He hopes that the research results can be reflected in decision-making and action of the government to serve majornational development strategies.
Prof Hu Jinguang pointed out that the center’s emphasis on “food safety administration” represents the social responsibilities of researchers of humanities and social sciences. The researches on the goal and approach of food safety administration, the relationship between government supervision and market economy, the relationship betweenrights and obligationsof market players are of great significance. He hoped that the deep discussions and argumentation could be centered on the role of humanities and social sciences in food safety administration and how to solvethe food safety problems.

Prof Li Xiguang, Vice Director of Research Center for Public Health, made a keynote speech entitled“The Analysis and Judgment of Public Opinion on Food and Drug Safety in the New Media Environment”. As a media expert, he introduced the current media environment’s impact on people’s life, and talked about how to scientifically and accurately judge the public opinion on food and drug safety. He continued to emphasize the importance of media in people’s thinking. We should collect all data and provide complete and reliable public opinions on safety to the party and the government,making a use of public opinion in guiding food safety management.
In the discussion session, experts and scholars conducted in-depth communication from the perspectives of technologies and management. They discussed how to promote the roles of humanities and social sciences in food safety administration, such as education of popular dietary culture, intervention in behaviors, popularization and publicity of science, and self-regulation in food industry.
Prof Shen Weixing, in his speech at the end of the seminar, attached great importance to food safety administration. He said the road ahead is still long and arduous, and the center needs to do more so as to solve practical problems and improve the China’s administration on food safety.
